Wow being an educator is a calling truly.
I have learned about students with learning disability and the variety of disorders was a great interest to me. I will be researching more methods of aiding them in their learning journeying.
It is interesting to note the difference in cognition and experience of each of different generations. The diversity adds a lot to the educational experience within the classroom setting. An instructor must be apt to meet the academic needs of each of the generations represented within a course.
This course allowed me to see the diffrent types a of problems a student with PTSD vor TBI will incounter in the class room.
Treat students as you would want to be treated and accept them as you would want to be accepted. Love your subject and let your teaching reflect that love to them so they will enjoy the learning process and be able to apply their knowledge in a positive fashion.
To assist with the needs of this changing student population, educators mush consider generational characteristics to ensure equity in learning opportunities. Specifically, educators in the classrooms will need to adapt and adjust for a changing student population providing instruction that meets the needs of multiple generations of learners , often within one classroom>
This diversity class was unique in its format with reflective writing and videos. I was pleasantly surprised ar finding a resource I did not know - the implicit bias test site from Harvard. I will definitely be using this in my human diversity course!
In institutions of higher education, student retention is enhanced when the faculty is familiar with the concept of students as customers, implements effective communication techniques, and sets guidelines for advising and mentoring students. Instructors need to focus on the learning needs of the students and realize that academic and non-academic factors influence the success of each student. The plan is to teach basic nursing skills using multiple methods of instruction. The students will have a written step-by-step guide for each skill, a video to watch that demonstrates the skill, and then a hands-on method in which the students perform the… >>>
I teach in the field of medical imaging and have long been aware that our national board certifying exam will allow testing accoommodation in accordance with the ADA guidelines. However, I was not aware of the number of individual students who could have benefitted from this accomidation had they been identified as having a learning disability. Thinking back over the years, I can remember at least 10 who I am sure would have been successful in our field had they been able to pass the board, but based on the time limit of the exam or other factors, they were… >>>
The most challenging aspect of teaching for me is addressing cultural diversity. In my classroom setting, cultural diversity extends far beyond geographical lines, so I find myself trying to identify and build an academic relationship. What I plan to do in order to become more diversified is to, of course, do what research I can to understand how to reach/teach all students. But, I also plan to create an open atmosphere in the classroom to allow time and space for more conversation and dialogue to broaden not only my view, but other classmates' views and perspectives on other cultures.
As teachers, we know that every student is unique and an individual. But students often feel grouped—they’re one of the smart kids, they’re on the football team, or they’re so-and-so’s sibling— and therefore not unique. Even with diversity, the same happens. Allow students to explore their individual diversity, from their country of ethnicity all the way down to their immediate family. It will show students that we are, in fact, all a part of large, meaningful groups, but we also have individual characteristics and experiences that make us all individual and unique.
