Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Ice Breaker Idea

I do an ice breaker card on the first day of class where my students fill in their home-town, favorite hobbie, etc. This helps me get to know them and recall their names. What also might be helpful is to have them include (voluntarily) a concern/fear they may have as they enter the program. This will help me to proactively address common anxieties that create road blocks to student success and establish a supportive atmosphere in my classroom.

Guest Critics in Class

I find in design oriented classes bringing in guest critics to look at and discuss each student work to be a great benefit. It gives the student a chance to dialogue with respected colleagues and more importantly get different point of view regarding their design work. The guest's input can be assessed and implemented if the student believes it is beneficial to their project, or it can filed away for further consideration. Guest critics also help students become more comfortable with presenting in front of others, which they will be doing for the rest of their academic and professional careers.

Classroom Prep

I like to keep a open close spreadsheet, as we would in a real kitchen, to keep the classroom consistantly set up for classes.

Cover sheets to help with lab enviroment

I find that giving cover sheet handouts to the students cut down dramatically on having to explain lab assignments over and over. It also is a great place to put any critical information pertaining to the labs that may not already be in their books. I've also heard students help other students by reminding them to use their cover sheets when unsure of some information needed to start or complete a lab assignment.

Going over the quiz/final

I go over the quiz's as soon they finish taking them, the students seem to like this. This gives them the chance to ask any questions they might have about the quiz.

Student profiles

I believe it is valuable to respond to individual student needs while maintaining consistency in scoring students performances.

Real world experiences and other examples

I find that by incorporating experiences that I have gone through that relate to the class study, really provides the student not only with great examples, but it also allows them into your world a little bit. Students tend to open up themselves and tend to become more relaxed.
