Informing students of status in course
Why is it important to keep students informed of their status in the course at all times?
Hi Don:
In fact, a lot of institutions are moving towards electronic gradebooks that allow the student to access their grades anytime they want to support this very idea you suggest.

Hi Sandra:
Indeed, students should have this opportunity to verify where they stand at all times. Some institutions are even moving towards electronic gradebooks to facilitate this idea.

Hi Scott:
And those adjustments you mentioned are so important for promoting a stronger outcome at the end of the course.

Hi Sandra:
To facilitate the very attitude you describe, a lot of institutions have moved to using electronic gradebooks that the student can access on a daily basis.

Hi Leslie:
On that note, instructors may want to consider what kind of feedback they can realistically offer the students on a regular basis, and tell the students about this on the first day of class to avoid the frustration pitfall you've described.

Hi Warren:
Many institutions try to expedite this process by using an electronic gradebook system the student can access anytime they want.

Hi Branetta:
One way to minimize the sensation that a certain grading style is "unfair" may be to create a rubric that describes exactly the expectations for every assignment for EVERY student.

Hi Brian:
Another method a lot of institutions are moving towards is electronic gradebooks that the student can access anytime they want via the internet.
Regards, Barry
Hi Perry:
By allowing the student to see where they stand on a consistent basis allows them the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible to promote a more successful outcome.
Regards, Barry
Hi Joshua:
Very true. Many institutions are moving towards electronic grading systems that show the student their grades on a daily basis for the very reasons you describe.

Hi Katheryn:
Many institutions are moving to electrionic gradebooks that allow a student to access their grade every day for the very reason you describe.
Regards, Barry
Hi SHerri:
Very true - and it may be helpful to the instructor to state how quickly the students should expect this, perhaps in a rubric or class syllabus given out the first day of class.

Hi Vernise:
In fact, a lot of schools are now using electronic gradebook systems that allow the student to access their grade on a daily basis to inform them of status in the way you describe.

Keeping students apprised of their course status is important so they understand the progress they have achieved and can strategize with the instructor to strengthen areas that require improvement.
Thanks Barry, it is always reassuring to know one is going down a valuable path. One of things I failed to mention is that I also believe the trust created spreads throughout the student's classmates and creates positive expectations in other students throughout the whole program.
Students will know exactly how they are performing in the course and are aware of areas in which they might need to improve. If a student is not doing well, he or she may require tutoring. By regularly informing students of their status, they will not be surprised at their performance near the end of the course.
Hi Martin:
Great! I think the more often students get information how they're doing contributes to their confidendence they can succeed. If that information is pers0onalized,, all the better. Personal communication helps create stronger relationship, trust, and ultimately better student outcomes.
Regards, Barry
In part so they know where they are but also to retain student 'trust' in that they are not surprised but results as the term progresses
It is important to keep students informed of their status in the course at all times so they know where they stand and they can improve on their weak areas. They can also evaluate their study skills if those are working for them or not, and so necessary changes can be done.
