Students need to know how they are progressing throughout the entire course. It is important they are kept up to date on tests and quizzes, but there are other factors that must be considered in order for them to reach their course goals. For instance, is their class participation, and attendance, adequate, are they absorbing past material and ready to move ahead into new material? Instructors need to keep their students always aware of their progress status so there will be no surprises with the outcome at the end of the course.
In my opinion its for the same reason you would want your employer to provide feedback you when you make a mistake or are excelling on a project. Feedback is very important. Students are no different! If you just finished administering a midterm and do not provide their grades during the next time the class meets then you are directly contributing to diminished attention and concentration because their thoughts will not be in the material you are covering but on the grades they got which they do not know about.
That shows them the teacher cares
All students have a personal objective in taking a course. Some start the course with the personal objective of getting an A while others are looking to master the material, but a passing grade is enough. However, in both cases the student needs to know where he or she is to determine if they are on track to meet that personal objective. We have a homework and a quiz each class period to give frequent feedback on mastery of material. The quizzes allow me to go back and refresh areas that they have done poorly as a class and them to work personally on areas where they have performed poorly individually. I hold individual conferences and set up actions plans for students trending in the wrong direction. I have found that students work harder to meet that personal objective when they know where they are along the way.
keeps students informed to help student stay on track
They need to know how whether their current study habits are paying off or need to be changed.
Informing students on their status in te course is a way of feedback to them how they grasp the subject, and if they need to ask for help to do better. Students know how they are doing on the course, and where they stand, if they need to work harder, or be tutored to do better.
It is essential to keep students informed of their grades and progress in a course. Specify the grading criteria clearly in the course syllabus. Specify the precentage of course grade from unit tests, assignments, and final exam. Determine whether a percentage of the course grade is class participation (including specific criteria)Include grading rubrics for class assignments (group projects, papers, nursing care plans, concept maps). At a minimum, provide students with their course grade at midterm and just prior to te final exam.
Students need and crave the feedback of how they are doing in the class. Feedback that is most immediate is what students prefer. I remember as a student wanting to know what I got on a test and the relief I got after knowing, good or bad.
Informing students of their success/status in a course serves dual, if not multiple, purposes. First, students are provided opportunity to identify and focus on areas in which improvement is needed. Students who have prior knowledge and experience in a particular subject are provided an opportunity to re-affirm strengths and competencies. Last, instead of waiting until the end of the course to report a possible failing grade, instructors who inform students of their success/status in the course convey the message that the instructor has an active interest in providing ample opportunity for the student to demonstrate improvement.
I think it is important to keep students informed ASAP. they then can make adjustments in thier efforts quickly and not fall behind. It also gives oppotunity for specific guidence like, tutoring, additional study material or to correct misunderstandings about subject material or expectations.
Informing students of their status in the course has two sides of it: students who did well would take pride and confidence on their hard work and this would motivate them to keep up the good work and face more challenges in the course, students who did not so well and those who perform low must realize that they need to exert more effort and focus to meet course requirements. The teacher must take this opportunity to solicit the student's perspective on how to improve in his performance by pointing out on what aspect of the course to improve, what behavior needs to monitor, and what help the teacher can offer.
Keep students informed of their status in a timely basis provides the best opportunity for students who are not doing well to make arrangements for additional tutoring or study time.
We use an online gradebook which makes grades quickly available to the students. This method is beneficial for both students and intructors! :)
I usually try to make contact with students who are struggling to offer suggestions for studying or encourage attendance to tutoring sessions. It's easy with the online gradebook, as I can message them directly from there.
STudents should be informed of grade status at all time so they are aware of how they are doing so it is not a suprise that they are failing
As an instructor it is my job to let my students know they are not successful early on in their academics, attendance, appearence, etc. I will write a student evaluation and have a student sign it, explaining I am making an entry into their electronic record. This is so they will have an opportunity to discuss what is happening and change their behavior and I can help them in by appropariate referral, etc. This also gives me a trail in case behavior does not change and I need proof to unfortunately exit the student for academics, behavior, etc. Fortunately, this applies to few students in the class to begin with, and even fewer students who do not smell when the coffee when originally approached and improve whatever offending behavior.

Most students want to know how they are doing throughout the course, if they need to focus more on one area than the other. It also allows the student to ask for the extra edlp or tutoring if needed before the end of the course.
I find it helpful to let them know how many point to get the grade they are shooting for.
It is important to keep students informed about their progress for several reasons:
* Students can evaluate the amount of effort put studying for the course based on their scores.
* The students will feel that they are being treated fairly.
* It reduces the anxiety associated with the grade earned in the course.
* It provides the opportunity to make any necessary correction on the grades.
Hi Pamela:
By consistently allowing students to have an idea of how they are doing in class, they have the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible. By doing this, they promote a more successful outcome for themselves by the end of the course.
