my students are always informed. they have a file in my drawer with all their test scores in it along with papers so if there is any questions i pull a spread sheet and their folder and sit down with the student and discuss their grade. that was they are not shocked at midterm or at the final.
Most of my students want to know where they stand in the course. They are also competitive with each other with grades.
Hi Allen:
Oooh...cold blooded! But I get your point. These are adults, but they often don't act like it.
I think students will do or not do what we tolerate as teachers (expectations). So keeping students informed helps them where know where they're at. It is their responsibility to take the needed action to make any improvements needed.

No crying over bad grades at the end of the course, they were aware of thier standing early on.
Hi Bari:
Really! No one likes surpises. And in effective classrooms, there should not be any. Some way to quickly keep students abreast of where they're at along with some occasional encouagement or advice is all it takes. Students will appreciate it.

I like to keep the students informed about their grade so there are no suprizes in the end. I have found that most students keep a close eye on their grades and when something looks out of place, they immediately ask.
Thanks.
Hi Joseph:
Good point about the less experienced student. Regular and frequent communication with students reduces anxiety as you say and helps buid confidence. I think teachers sometimes overlook the significance of the little bit of attention they get from their teacher. It takes little time, costs nearly nothing, but can have great impact.

For many of our career college students, their current course of study is their first time in a classroom for a very long time. Keeping them up to dates on grades builds self-confidence and keeps them focused on the course. I find many of the students are very anxious as they begin new courses and relax as ther continually see their grades. For many passing a test or section or a term is a great accomplishment and should be communicated.
Hi George:
True, some students don't want or need individual attention if they can get the information they need by themselves. I would say still, these students need that special touch from their instructor, whether it be in updating status, or just conversing about other class topics.
Regards, Barry
the electronic grading is great. Students can look up their formative and summative scores at their liesure through their own password protected "campus" page. For many students this is all they need. Others can still have individual session for explanation and discussion. It adds flexibility for teh student to choose the level of satisfaction they want while simultaneously relieveing the instructer of talking with students that are ready to move on and are already satisfied.
Hi Ricardo:
Good point - avoid misunderstanding. A class should have a pupose and keeping the student posted as to their status in achieving the goals or purpose of the class seems like a natural occurence.
Regards, Barry
It is important to give student feedback so they know where they stand. You want to avoid misunderstandings so it is a good idea to keep your grades and points updated so when a student asks on his or her status you can recite their standing in the class.
Hi Lauraine:
Very true. Students (and people in general) like to feel they're in control of their situations. Frequent sharing of class progress contributes to this sense of knowing and opportunity to make or not make adjustments to study plans, assignment completion, etc. It's up to them. Some students are satisfied just a passing grade while others are wanting to really excel. Sharing progress helps them make these kinds of decisions.

Hi Quesstonnal:
I also think student feel like their teacher cares about their success in the class when the teacher takes time to regularly and frequently discuss class progress. It helps build relationships and perhaps provides an opportunity for students to improve based on where they stand in the class.
Regards, Barry
It is important to let students know at all times how they are doing in a class because this keeps them focused on their goal of what they are there to learn.
Studens take an active interest when they are made aware of their progress. Most respond positively when given feedback on how to improve their grades.
Hi Bryant:
Students are always interested in how they're doing and (some student), how they can improve. By developing a process whereby students are informed regularly of their progress they'll have the best opportunity to make adjustments in their study efforts and preparation in order to possibly achieve a better grade.

I believe informing students of thier status in a particular course could alleviate problems of focus and inattentiveness. If a student has a roadmap of thier course and is given periodic reminders of the finish line. It would make thier journey less stressfull and they can concentrate on the task at hand. Maybe this is the reason why highways have road signs that tell you how far you have to go before your destination. It is only right to let a student know where they stand and give them a taste of what the finish line would look like.
Hi Karen:
I think students like to know about their grades, but more important is are they learning the necessary information. When teachers meet and personalize their visits with students, this demonstrates they care and the student is much more likely to want to do as well as they can.

Hi Eli:
I like you comment about just memorizing a bunch of stuff. If it's not practical and pertinent, don't even waste time.
