Experience with Blogs in the Online Classroom

Good evening!

For those who have incorporated blogs in their online classrooms, how effective are they?  Have student engagement and participation increased?  How much coaching has been necessary to ensure proper etiquette and respect?  What advice would you give to a teacher considering using blogs in the online classroom?

Brandon Henry

Do I learn by teaching others? Yes.

Without the "fringe" benefit of being able to learn from students teaching would be a very intensive, cumberson, boring way for me to earn a living.

What is life without the ability to learn from others?  For example, a student holds two jobs, has three kids, and is caring for her sick parent.

How does she manage?  I'd like to know.

Also, a topic envoks strong emotion.  Why?

Finally, a problem presented for class dicussion results in students sharing their unique points of view.

How fortunate am I to be in involved?!!

And then too there is the obvious in connection to this course.  The more feedback I recieve about the lessons I construct and facilitate, the better able I am to improve my craft.

How about you?

Tone of voice and immediacy still hold sway

I'm all for multiple delivery methods when it comes to engaging students and helping them along.

However, every time I pick up the phone and actually talk to a student I get a much better sense of the issue at hand and am able to further solidify a positive relationship with that person.  My experience is also true when it comes to communication at work.  Lately, the trend at my college is to discuss complex issues via email.  A person will announce that they are soliciting feedback on a given question or issue and then we are supposed to "weigh in."  I find this disconcerning becuase of the static nature of written response, the tendency to then be able to take what has been written out of context or the wrong way, and the ease at which we seem to be forsaking the give and take of face to face communcication.

All this to say, phone to phone (face to face) may be the best route, but if workplace trends are moving towards email based topic exploration and decision making then I think we as online educators may do our students a large service by holding our students accountable for their online communcication, since they will surely be held accountable in the workplace.

Hello Out There

I want to know if anyone has any course material for INT106 outide of the book

Only if they show up!

Although there are tools and strategies available to enhance engagement, if students are super busy with their multi-dimensional lives and are not in the classroom you can not put them in place. Any suggestions?

Promoting a personal relationship with learners

Hello All (I do not know who will read this...)

One way my online nursing programs promotes the alliance is through the use of Zoom meetings.  Zoom connects learners and faculty face-to-face in real time.  Questions can be answered, empathy received, and collegial support delivered just in time.   The Zoom meetings with our students are always appreciated.

Smmative formats include tests, performance test, wriiten assessment, standardized test and oral assessments.  Why is summative assessment important?

Online students and time management problems…

Online Instructors:

What technique or method do you use for helping students who poorly manage their time management? Do you have any special way of getting them to use their time more efficiently? As they are at a distance, you need to continue communicating your advice, support and concerns, however I've found that once a student is aware of their time management issues, there's a better chance of helping them overcome them. Sometimes it's simply a matter of rethinking the time spent on classroom work!

For example, typical of many students, I had one – a single mother with two small children who worked from noon until 8:30PM. She would drop the kids off to school each morning and arranged for a family member to pick them up at 2PM to babysit them until she came home. After an exhausting day at work she had a list of chores that still needed to be done: tidying up her home, fixing something to eat, spending time with her children and finally seeing them off to bed. She had little time for schoolwork so was forced to rush through it every night and in return was not gaining the benefit of learning. Weekends were spent trying to catch up which doesn't help learning retention either.

Needless to say, she was unhappy, frustrated, and a bit angry at the situation. After some discussion with her I offered a possible solution. Since she was getting a good night's sleep each evening, I suggested that in the mornings, after she got her children ready and off to school, she should spend that quality time before going to work each day working on her schoolwork. Then the weekends would be far less stressful and quality work could be achieved over the weekend as well! Mixed with domestic chores it gave her the chance to "think" in different ways so that burnout was less likely.

In short– it worked! Instead of thinking of homework as an "evening job", for her doing it in the mornings was more logical– her grades went from a low "C" to a "B+" rather quickly!

Aside from teaching students to be familiar with the online environment, making them aware of available resources, and the student lounge, what other options are there for building community?

Class Participation

Without being overly intrusive, how can an instructor encourage class participation in a small class?

Motivating Online Students to Manage Their Time

Online students are usually working adults, who have families. They are busy and their time is usually consumed in working and family activities. Having a positive relationship with students is important, but how can instructors motivate these students to effectively manage their time in order to complete weekly assignments?

Retention

Retention is essential if not for your institution but also for the studnet that had high hopes and for some reason fell short of those goals.

experience with creation

Has anyone been able to create their own game and use it in the online learning environment?

I don't think I have the time to invest in creating a game since I online teach part-time and work a full time job as well.

How to Handle Night Owls

Does anyone have any advice for handling students who are "Night Owls"?  I have several students who fit this category and they always seem to post late and want immediate answers!

Cool technology keeps students' attention

It is very important to keep up with the newest and coolest technolgy because digital natives speak that language and anything else is foreign to them. I can't wait for Facebook to come out with their take on virtual realtiy. Now that will be really cool!

Engaging Online Learners

I have completed this course!  I am incorporating the steps outlined when interacting with online learners, communicating coursework/assignments and providing feedback.  Simply addressing a student by name, then asking how he/she is doing is an excellent approach to getting a response.  Also, this course provided great insight regarding the importance of the "Working Alliance," this positive working relationships is how we gain and maintain the trust, rapport  and mutual agreement with our students.
