Very seldom you will have a class that every student learns the same way or learn at the same speed. This is why group discussions are beneficial. After discussing the subject, put students into a group and allow them to discuss the topic and then have each group to state what they discussed in their group. Students learn from each other and they feel that they can be honest with each other in their group.

I agree that with students the first impression is a lasting impression. My opinion, students start observing you most of the time before you walk into the class room. When a student discovers that they have a certain instructor for a class, they start asking other students who you are and what do they think of that instructor? Now the student have a preceed idea about you. It is now in your hands to make a positive impression if they have the opposite idea of your knowledge and skills.

Alone with my syllabus, I include a spreadsheet that shows the exact breakdown of their grades. I also send it via email to each student so they can see how their grades are calculated. Every day in class I request that the student list on their spread sheet their daily grades including if they were late and if they were absent. At the end of the Mod, I speak to each student individually and compare my notes with their notes. Students know what their grades are and their attendances at all times.
