I work in an envornment with a lot of physical activity. I try to recognize peoples stamina limitations as well. Sometimes other students complain they are not "pulling their weight" What can I do to lessen that stress as well?

I generally give unlimited time for tests etc., which can slow things down greatly. How much time is enough on average, and then how much allowance should be given from there? In the food service industry success is delivering quality product on a given time line, how do you accomplish both a simulation of industrial urgency and learning fairness?

As I attempt to learn more about my students academic abilities, I will often ask them to read a statement aloud to me in a secluded area so I can be sure they have adequate reading ability. Although I am a slow reader myself and often have to re-read passages to get it right, my comprehension and retention are excellent in the end. Is there any link between poor reading ability and hesitance to read aloud or are they separate issues?

I really like self evaluation; it gives students the chance to be self critical, it encourages them to take ownership of their actions, it allows them to “save face” and many other positive attributes. What I am not quite sure about however, is using their self analysis as final grading data. In short, very good students tend to be overly self critical in a learning environment, and less hard working students tend to be very generous toward self grading. Although I find it a useful tool and a good measure of a students overall awareness, I think it can go… >>>

Hello Gary; I like to create a somewhat chaotic envornment for the student when they have in class production projects so they begin learn to prioritize, problem solve, deal with stress, take iniative learn to both lead and follow. It usually takes a few times before they realize there is a "method to the madness". Does this approach make an instructor look unorganized in the long run?

Many instructors have their own reasoning for their method...how do you open students to multiple possibilities while still making them follow your methodology, without seeming stubborn or closed minded yourself?

Susan; Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate that you did not just give me some canned answer. I can see your point that we simply need to mix it up. I consider my job, in part, is to be an entertainer, so I understand the need to mix the medium. I am wondering if you or any of your colleagues can give any hints or advice concerning the visual aspects especially the video medium. The copywrited stuff is so intimidating with all of their rules etc. Is it effective to do inhouse video, which may have lowered production value… >>>

I realize that we all have an inherrent and/or preferred method of processing information, but I feel we are doing student a disservice if we allow them to rely only on their strenghts. If we allow teaching modality to be goverened by the students preferences alone, we may underutilize the instructors strengths and personality. Instructors should stretch their own ability and dabble in modes of communicating ideas in diverse and exciting ways. As well we should expect students to increase their proficencies and stretch their own comfort zones by expecting them to grow in areas they are not as strong… >>>
