Rosezza, Your process sounds very thorough. You ensure that your students receive written notifications of the requirements and take the time to answer any of their questions. The verification process may be a little overwhelming to students; however, as we approach 13/14 some of these requirements maybe decreased back the various categories and this could add some complication to the process. Rosezza, I think all of us would agree that having the option of the paper FAFSA is beneficial in certain circumstances. However, the FOTW process is much quicker and easier for th student and the parent. Also, the return of results to enable us to package and award the student is more efficient. Appreciate your participating in the forum. It is always good to see what others are doing and the approach taken to online processing. Sincerly, Chyrl Ayers

Michael, The FSA Handbook - AVG Section - Verification chapter indicates your college must have written policies and procedures on the following items: deadlines for student to submit documentation & consequences if they fail to submit; method of notifying students of changes in their awards due to verification; correction procedueres; standard procedures for referring overpayment cases. Also, the guidance in the FSA Handbook indicates your college must provide the applicants selected for verification a written statement explaining: Documents required; Student responsibilities; and Notification methods; As long as your policies have procedures to meet these requirements you are within the requirements.… >>>

Michael, That is great approach to assisting students; however, one of your requirements is that the college must have a defined and published policy and procedures on students selected for verification. This requirement can be satisfied through publishing your requirements for completetion of verification, timeframe to complete, how you handle corrections and recalculation of award amounts, etc. in your consumer information or catalog. The hands on approach is great from a customer service perspective; however, defined guidelines are required. Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
Michael, The participants in this post tend to be split between all of equal important or that one is most important with the other two characteristics playing an important role in the process. There is not a right or wrong answer since it is more about your preference. All items are important and work together to make the FA Office successful. Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
Kim, You point is a good one. No one is crazy about change; however, it maybe easier for a student or parent to understand the new Verification Categories and the documents required for completion. The new categories will allow the student and/or parent to fully understand why and what is required. Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers

Shawn, The described method can be a hard lesson to learn but many of us in this field had to learn through "fire." Whenever you discover an area of non-compliance the best course of action is a plan on how to correct going forward and what is needed to clean up any issues of the past. Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
Shawn, That is a great approach to looking for potential issues. It does not have to require hours of review but you have to review some to ensure compliance with requirements. Great approach! Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
Shawn, I completely agree that having a personal exit interview is the best method; however, it is critical to have a plan for those students who do not allow you that opportunity. How do you work with students that disappear? Do you mail their exit counseling, try to set up an appointment to return for the in person counseling? Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
Shawn, How do you ensure that students understand their accountability? Do you accomplish this through counseling, personal interviews, etc? I am sure all of the participants recognize the importance of making students accountable and would appreciate your techniques. Sincerely, Chyrl Ayers
