As a librarian, the tests I give are always practice, sometimes instructors give points, we tell the students this ahead of time. If, students are able to do my in-class quizzes correctly, the result is that they will do well on their research papers. If, someone is having trouble I offer them the solution of stopping in and asking for more assistance.

As, a librarian my tests are not for points while I am teaching but for points students will receive in their research papers for excellent citation and reference pages. So, all of my work is a pre-test. I first pre-test by giving the students an article on a powerpoint slide and ask them how to cite it. This, of course is after I have explained citation and how it works, and why it is so important. Then, I show the correct format, and ask for questions. After a couple of these types of in-text citation tries, I then have students… >>>

I find that as a librarian that hands on learning helps students learn citation ruled extremely well. First, however, I must teach them the rules and I use PowerPoints coupled with lecture on the topic.

As, a librarian, I constantly encourage field trips to the library from classes, so that students will become expert users of library resources. If, students get to see what their field of work looks like outside of the class this helps them to become more focused on their studies.

I feel that with library instruction handouts only provide possible ideas of resources for students to use. However, I really try to encourage them to realize that all of the information they need to do successful research is available via the library's website 24/7! We have research guides, databases, how to study, how to do research papers, how to cite a paper. Then, of course, I encourage students to ask questions. There isn't a STUPID question! Librarians can assist students in cutting research time down and becoming more successful.

I found this a very helpful idea. Powerpoints tend to be the outlines of the 21st century. However, I find that students really get bored with them. So, instead, I use Powerpoints to outline my presentations and then I give live presentations for my library instructions, trying to get students involved in the discussions as much as possible.

I teach library information sessions. My instructor style is to ask students questions about library services, databases, research assistance, have they used the databases remotely, etc. This usually works out well because the students seem to feel like they are part of the lesson experience, instead of just receivers of information that I am talking to them about. I feel that they learn more when they take an active role in the lesson.

As a librarian, I am always asking questions of my patrons to help them to develop an inquiring mind. The students must learn how to logically think about their research projects and what type of resources will best fit their end goal in writing a research paper. This means I need to help them by asking questions of them about the resources that they are using. Is Wikipedia, the best resource to use for a college research paper? How, do they know that the website that they found is accurate? How, do would you find a resource in the library,… >>>

Each student who comes into our library has their own way of learning information. It's important that librarians determine what method will help him/her find the information needed to complete the assignment. Will, a student need a couple one on one sessions, or a quick tour or how to get around the library. I have found that the best way to assist is to listen and ask questions - it's the best way of finding out what your students need.
As, a librarian, it is my goal to assist students with their research and citation of their research. I design, hands on "tests" that help students understand how to use the library. I don't often have to use a test, but I do quiz them while they are using the library's resources.
