I usually find the proper lecture format to fit specific student learning styles within the first quarter of the course, but this course will help me to find that connection sooner in the semester. By adjusting to the students sooner, I can relay more information.
I have always felt strongly about creating a student-friendly atmosphere immediately on the first day of class. This course has not only reinforced my notion, but has taught me that the first day of class is even more important than I had originally thought. The first day can dictate the tone (for better or worse) for the rest of the semester.
There is a wide array of student backgrounds and learning styles. Proper planning and preparation allows me to explain course information smoothly and handle many surprises without losing my direction or composure.
A wide range in age within a single classroom often seems daunting. The differences in learning styles and technological manipulation can create a lapse in a group's ability to retain information and keep up with the course. However, a strong professional image and the use of several different instructional styles can act as the glue to hold together an entire classroom, regardless of age.
