Susan, While I understand that people want to be creative and stand out, I agree with you 100% about the use of templates-they are a standard that most people expect from candidates. Elizabeth Kemler
Susan, This is an excellent idea. There is nothing more valuable and informative than real world examples of what does, and doesn't work. Elizabeth Kemler
Susan, This is very important advice..its easy to forget that everyone has access to this kind of information. Elizabeth Kemler
Susan, Yes, it always feels good to see how your experience translates into job-relevant qualities and skills. To keep students motivated we need to stay in close touch with them, help them keep track of their search, have a bulletin board up with job postings and job-find successes (see previous posts on this topic for more ideas). Students need to continually be reminded that they are not alone in their search, and that there are opportunities out there. Elizabeth Kemler
Amy, This is so true. As educators, we can never assume that all of our students have been prepared in the same way for the working world. Elizabeth Kemler
Amy, What great ideas; it's very helpful to know specifically what each student's goals are when assisting them with the job search, and the placement and employment boards are a great way to keep your students up to date and motivated. Elizabeth Kemler
Amy, Utilizing industry associations is a great idea-you really can't beat that kind of real-world feedback. Elizabeth Kemler
Amy, I am a big fan of mock interviews as I've mentioned a few times in the forums. Its also great to have students give each other feedback regarding first impressions in these mock interviews-but making sure to give them guidance on how to make the feedback constructive. Elizabeth Kemler
Gloria, Sometimes figuring out what you want from a job and a job environment takes some work, and time. Many students don't realize just how many options are out there. Being able to look at a comprehensive list of industries and the corresponding skills/qualities that are required of each can really help them to narrow down their choices and simplify their job search. Elizabeth Kemler
Gloria, The negative self-message can really be a huge obstacle for students. Helping them to replace them with more positive, motivating messages will enable them to see better, the opportunities that they have. Elizabeth Kemler
