Jennifer, It sounds like you and your team are actively involved with your students job search and offering them very helpful guidance. I like the idea of tracking the different 'search avenues' as it gives you a good idea of where people are finding the most jobs. Elizabeth Kemler
Jennifer, I agree absolutely with this. Both giving and receiving feedback when it's not 100% positive is a difficult thing for many people. I believe it takes a lot of consistent practice to learn how communicate in a way that is constructive and respectful. It also takes practice to learn how to receive constructive criticism without taking it personally or getting offended. Elizabeth Kemler
Gloria, I think that ongoing practice goes a long way towards helping the students feel more confident and secure. Elizabeth Kemler
Gloria, I agree, and often students don't see right away how much they could benefit by making the effort grow with the company. It's our job to remind them of the potential long term benefits. Elizabeth Kemler
Jennifer, I agree that it's really helpful to have these kinds of guidelines as a reference. It's especially easy to lose track of how important these things are when you're working somewhere for an extended period of time. Elizabeth Kemler
Jennifer, What a great way to keep your students motivated. I'm sure it helps immensely to have these kinds of ongoing reminders that there are good jobs out there and they're possible to get. Elizabeth Kemler
Hi Dax, For some reason my original response never went through. What I'd said was that while I agree that its a good idea to have students express their personalities through their written presentation, I also think it's wise not to stray too far from the norm because not all of the people reviewing their resume/cover letters are themselves 'out of the box' thinkers.
Dax, I know that these can be tough-especially if you're in a job you either weren't crazy about to begin with, or have grown tired of. Of course if you don't focus on growing even in these jobs, it will have been in many ways a waste. I like to remind students that giving your best will always ultimately pay off. Elizabeth Kemler
Dax, This is really good advice. I can certainly imagine what challenge it is to suddenly find yourself basically 'on your own' in this new environment. Respect is absolutely key and will most definitely help the student to be perceived as both non-threatening and a team player. Elizabeth Kemler
Dax, You really can't beat mock interviews for practice. And I think for many students, doing this in front of your peer is more challenging than with a stranger-which is a good thing to remind them. Elizabeth Kemler
