These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hugh, Humor is a great teaching tool, especially when it is used in connection with field experiences. We all have had humorous situations occur in our work lives and our students like to hear about them when we are discussing topics related to those experiences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bonnie, I really like the way you use the life experiences of your students to encourage student support and interaction. By using this approach you are increasing the value of each student, not only in the class but to their classmates as well. This is a good lesson for them to learn as they are going to need to know how to work with others once they are in the workplace. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Hugh, I think this is so important because I see a lot of students today that do not meet deadlines because they haven't really had to. The more you can help them along these lines the better prepared they will be in the workplace. As you mention that have to meet deadlines in the workplace if they are going to be successful. The more they understand this the better. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Gregory, Great comments on the two aspects of being a role model. You are right about it being both external and internal. It is by both that students evaluate the instructor and decide that they do have a learning leader as their teacher. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Edward, Think time is so valuable in situations like this. Students need to see the reason why it is good at times to just step back, think about the situation and then propose possible solutions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Laura, This is the major value of a clear and concise syllabus. It gets everyone off to a good start. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristiin, Well said and right on in terms of expectations. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kristiin, Right you are about how wide a net a role model can cast as students observe and emulate their learning leaders. We need to remember this as we conduct ourselves be it in the school or community setting. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amanda, Good way to reconnect with your students. As you have noticed they really like hearing stories from the field. These stories reinforce what you are sharing with them in class and as a result they see more value in the content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amanda, Well said and so important. This is what a first class meeting should be about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
