About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Emily, Thanks for your post! We even suggest that individual departments also have mission statements that reflect their roles in, and congruent support of, the unified mission. Jay Hollowell

Hi Lawrence, What an excellent point! I rarely hear that the mission statement is a promise, but that is exactly what it is! Thanks! Jay Hollowell
Elizabeth, Thanks so much for your comments. We love to hear that school representatives take on the role as advocates and, particularly, work at resolution of any issues in a collaborative way! Bravo! Jay Hollowell

Travis , Your'e right Travis, it is really in the best interest of students to clearly communicate expectations in the beginning - expectations from the school, the program and employers, as well as expectations that the student has of the program, school and workplace. It is both an opportunity and challenge to balance all of those expectations. Jay Hollowell

Ryan, This is a very good analogy; I might even add that as the mission statement the road map, the core values are the integral points along the way, the landmarks if you will, to help ensure that the road map is being utilized accurately and effectively! :-) Jay Hollowell
Thanks Crystal, Early intervention in such situations is one of the hallmarks of good student customer service and also helps to manage expectations across the board. Jay Hollowell

Thanks Travis and to all who have commented on the importance of the school catalog. The catalog is a HUGE resource, a handbook if you will, that reflects on every part of a school's nature. Jay Hollowell
