As stated in this course becoming a IDE is a balance of a SME and IDE. SME is the subject mater being covered and keeping up-to-date as to new types of new products and technology. IDE as I see it is being able to transfer the “how to” to the students that are in class. What I try to do is use issues that students have on there cars or someone they know, this makes the class more interactive and different each course. That the improvements that I would implement into our processes; is giving the student the tools that are needed to be a success. Study skills, counseling, mentoring Program and tutoring can be essential tools that can be used for retention purposes. That’s the states in this model there is no silver bullet. The other improvement that I would make would be in our communication to the student, it seems in several cases that not all involved parties are on the same page, therefore students are not hearing the same time which makes it very frustrating for the student. Typically what I would be looking for would be a student that has failed their first test. An approach that student to see if there was anyway that I could help. Typically if you make the first move toward helping the student resolve the situation many times they will be free giving of information as to what may be causing the problem. Depending on the situation you can start getting involved in helping the student to find different resources to help them through the problem area that they are having. Instructors have the opportunity to identify most academic or personal issues that students may have and will need to identify them if possible. From what I have seen over the years is that most students will become frustrated to the point of forgoing their dreams. This now comes my part to help remove that frustration (if I can) by talking with the student about this frustration and help the student come up with a working plan that will help remove most of the frustration.
