The student with low self confidence is one of our greatest challenges in any course. Instructors need to teach the student how to build this confidence and overcome their own negativity. Let the student know you believe in them and the progress that the student makes. Guide the student in making decisions giving some support as the student becomes more confident in what they can do.

The basic CAT that I use is questioning of the material being covered, although I try to use different methods of CAT. The Minute Paper does work very well when you want to see where the classes that would take her subject matter. The punctuated Lectures or what I call “ blast from the past”, I will ask questions about topics that I have already covered either two hours prior to or from the last part of the day from the day before. I have found that using different types of CAT have to be used because of the learning… >>>

I don’t bother to count the questions that I ask and class, I do know that I ask many questions and class and on lab. In teaching electronic courses I can use “what if” Type questions and then put all of those answers that I receive from students on the board then as a class we go through those answers picking out those that apply the ones that do not apply I will ask deeper questions as to what they would apply to. In a lab condition I have a tendency to do the same type of thing.

In course 17, the basic electrical courses that students come into typically do not have any idea of what is taking place. And knowing this are tried to incorporate all learning styles that students might have. A good example of this is before we go out to lab I will go through the PowerPoint, demonstrate procedures, have students do the procedure and then have those students show others on how to do the same procedure and give help whenever needed. This type of process seems to work out quite well for me to lecture first, then do the PowerPoint, do… >>>

I have found that both at-risk students and advanced students want to know how they are doing in class. At the start of the course I will inform the students that I will give them up-dates on grades (hours, test, labs and down grades). At that time I will coach any students who were at risk of failure.
using power point and the whiteboard in combination. Using electrical component on the PPT and the have a student start a circuit then have that student call on others. The students get a big bang out of this. At the end and after all corrections have been made we have a working circuit.
Like others have stated, having all hand-outs, quizzes and other information prepared ahead of class is crucial to keep things flowing. If sometimes things will not go as it should ……. Bad note gets in, have a plan B flexibility in any class is good.
The biggest mistake was class control. Over the years I have learned what and what not to do in a class (trial by fire) and sill fine tuning the class control. I have found that class control can sometimes be a give and take, as long as the Instructor is in the lead.

Adverse affects of poor student monitoring skills would be: the loss of respect of students, not gotten their monies worth, ability to learn the topic and most of all a JOB in that industry. Most of the time I will do what is stated in module, but most class will be different and will have to adjust to that class. If the instructor is consistent, word will get around to other students at that school and this would mean less issues that the instructor will have to deal with.

The trait that I find most challenging is the student that would be the “quiet ones”. Students that takes notes and does labs but yet does poor on tests in class. I have found in some cases that this type of student will have a very poor image of themselves and are scared to ask questions in class. Will meet with the student after/before class and tell them that I will be calling on them in class to answer questions. When I do call on them I make sure it will be an easy question for them to answer and… >>>
