When we discuss diversity and the issue of ableism comes up in class, I find it important to let the students know that I have a learning disability and that as a child I was labeled LD gifted. My students already know that I have achieved my Bachelor's and Master's degrees as well as licenses as a notary public, a massage therapist, and an esthetician so they know that I have achieved a lot and let nothing stand in my way. My school currently does not allow for extra credit. However, I found that students were showing up late for classes a lot and not reading the material, so I created reading quizzes. I give a short quiz on the reading material at the beginning of each class before we go over the material. If they are not there for it, they do not get the opportunity to take the quiz.
