Activity

I try to show an active and positive presence in my classes, from the very beginning. Recently, I have begun hosting a ”Live Welcome Session” before our 1st lesson is due. Students get a warm welcome and a tour of our online course. It absolutely helps students to get a strong start when they can be confident that someone is there to offer guidance and help through tough spots.

I am looking forward to having students' learning improve through using and developing rubrics.

I have found some sample rubrics to use to build my own using Excel.

Looking forward to building and testing it for reliability, validity, and fairness.

Through the use of rubrics, I would like to encourage students to self-assess and reflect on their learning successes and short-comings. I would like to see rubric feedback be a vehicle for improving study skills.

The rubric can enable students to better understand learning goals. I like the concept of a rubric enabling students to improve the quality of their course work, while they learn.

Moodle user, here...

I have used the "Lesson" activity (in Moodle) to address various learning styles via video, text, and linked outside activities (i.e. matching exercises,etc.). At the end of the lesson, there is usually a link to a quiz, a discussion, or some other activity. I find I have more flexibility in presenting information and encouraging student engagement.

I have also been using a whiteboard site as a "virtual office".

Great insights.... Thanks!

I just finished my first class with Max Knowledge just in time to prepare my upcoming online Statistics course. I printed out many of the bulleted lists from EL102, and I plan to use these as checklists, as I prepare and update the course website. While I already use most of these, I now have a fresh take on "Teaching Online Learners". I especially want to focus on many of the pointers from the "Project Your..." sections. These will help to improve my "turnaround time" when responding to student submissions and/or inquiries; the lists will help me create an improved… >>>

I have been a Mathematics Instructor, in Higher Education, for almost 20 years... Most of my career has involved teaching online courses, "hybrid" and "full". In my experience, I have identified two big hurdles that students must overcome, in order to successfully complete

an online math course:

  • Math Anxiety (online AND in-class) - has many faces (testing difficulties, failure to even begin assignments, etc.
  • Lack of Self-Discipline - students seem to ignore deadlines, lack of communication, "entitlement syndrome", dropping out early on, etc.

What are some safeguards/techniques/interventions that you guys use to intervene with students who show signs of… >>>
