Regina, Interesting system. This probably works well when you don't have a ton of tasks to complete. When you do, it might make more sense to start writing things down as opposed to keeping mental notes. Of course you have to do what works best for you! Dr. Melissa Read
Andrew, Indeed true. Breaking larger tasks into smaller chunks makes them so much more manageable and less daunting. Sometimes it's simply impossible to get motivated to complete large tasks, but chipping away at the pieces is far more attractive. Dr. Melissa Read
Bill, Yes, that's the target we are all driving toward. To do lists definitely make that goal more attainable. Sometimes, there is no avoiding stressful situations. But these lists really help because they give us a sense of greater control when everything is on paper. Dr. Melissa Read
Rasiel, Aerobics sound like they are really working for you. What's wonderful is the way we can do them at home. There are some great DVDs out there for that. Finding a local gym with an aerobics class is another great outlet. Dr. Melissa Read
Michael, Sounds like a plan. Yes, it's tempting to accomplish certain tasks immediately. However, we've really got to take a look at our priorities instead. It doesn't all have to get done today, just the important stuff! Dr. Melissa Read
David, I understand completely. It can give us great peace of mind to have a plan of attack organized before we start our day. When we don't set goals for ourselves at the start of the day, it's hard to know if we have been successful by the end. Dr. Melissa Read
Eduardo, That's great to hear. It sounds like there may be a way to streamline your grading process even more. The scantron machine can work great for multiple choice exams. Also, online or computerized test administration could completely do the work for you. When you spend less time grading, you can spend more time investing in other things, like lecture preparation and office hours. These are high value for students. Dr. Melissa Read
Johan, Hmmm, Sounds like you may be balancing more than you can handle. Where possible, you might consider task delegation. If you have anyone who might be a good candidate to help you complete your tasks, go ahead and reach out to explore your options. While it's hard to let go, sometimes, this is the best strategy for getting it all done. Dr. Melissa Read
Teri, Indeed true. As instructors, we are often balancing too much and it cannot be completed all at once. Taking a step back and realizing that it's ok to attack things in order of importance can give us great piece of mind. It helps us organize our approach and helps us set realistic expectations of ourselves as well. Dr. Melissa Read
Dawn, Wow, what a find! Sometimes we have to invest a little time searching for the right solution. This is a perfect example. The search can be frustrating and a little time consuming, but the end result can be great as I imagine you are now experiencing with that affordable gym! Dr. Melissa Read
