Kurt, Do you see any changes to your on ground students' expectations because of new technology...even if you're not using it in the course? Dr. Ruth Reynard

How about "new literacies"?  What kinds of new skills are developing because of the uses of new technology?

Helpful article on the topic: http://www.sp.uconn.edu/~djleu/newlit.html

@rwatson05620 : Group writing can really help those who have writing anxiety and can enrich the learning experience - individual writing, however, also helps students "work" their ideas and "defend" or support those ideas, which, in turn build confidence.  How do you coach those students who have writing anxiety when writing individually ?

Ralph, I agree...the problem with these more "holistic" methods is that they are not as neat and easily reported as simple test scores. We're fighting an "uphill" battle in this! Dr. Ruth Reynard

Literacy is ongoing and should be owned by every individual - as an instructor, do you read  and write regulalry? Do you also expect your students to read and write in every class? Listening and speaking are also literacy skills, so how much do you expect your students to listen and speak/discuss/debate/discuss?  OR....do you think this is the business of language teachers only? How about the 5th literacy skill...comprehension?  Do you check for understanding in EVERY class and do you have students explain or demonstrate in order to exhibit their understanding?

I would love to hear your ideas on these… >>>

Bill, Very true...simply using and interfacing with new technology and digital environments require skills that students will benefit from in their study and in their future career. Dr. Ruth Reynard

Bill, Yes, so that the tablets and other mobile devices are set up to fully connect and network the student as well as provide access to the learning environments and research sources...an integrated system for sure. Dr. Ruth Reynard
Bill, Yes, the constraints of the physical environments are non-existent and connectedness is ubiquitous. Dr. Ruth Reynard
Bill, Yes, it truly provides a rich mixture of the best in both worlds, so to speak. I am finding that many younger students prefer hybrid or blended to fully online, as they really like the occasional human contact. Dr. Ruth Reynard
Sandra, Very true. The effective use of technology can help to engage students in the learning process and with everyone participating, the environment is enriched for everyone. Dr. Ruth Reynard
