About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Andrea, and this is why we need to be teaching & demonstrating an appropriateness & balance in both areas so our students also grow in these areas. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Cindy, this is an excellent strategy as it opens their minds to what they will be learning & prepares them for what's to come & then they do better in reflecting on what they just learned. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Katrina, and these type of situations are a great eye opener to our students & a great teaching opportunity to show them the value of actually learning the material & process. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Miriam, this is a good point & a great story. I think too often we "assume" they can't live without technology when in reality they are just used to it & appreciate the convenience. Think about it for yourself: could you live without your cell phone? Sure you could, but you really enjoy the convenience. Are we that different? Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Alice, and I think a key to this is that we not lock into "our way" but we try to understand the variety of learners in our classes & help them as much as possible. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Ziaul, I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking so I give it a couple of answers. 1) If you mean as Gen Yers age do their characteristics vary, I would say yes as part of what we see is due to their youth & they are growing & maturing & so some of this is related to being young. 2) If you are referring to where they fall in the Gen Y band, I would also say yes there is variation. Those who are the earliest in a generation band are often very similar to both generations. Hope… >>>

Cindy, yes, this is a great use of the groups as it encourages the listening to & understanding of a diversity of viewpoints. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Karen, this is true for all fields, but especially in technology & medical type of fields. The advantage is that it forces us to stay fresh & keep moving forward ourselves. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Medeina, These are great methods to help these students be successful & to feel a part of the classroom. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Tracy, this is so true & by having them share we validate their previous experiences & they will be more likely to engage with the material. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
