Do you find that the same intervention practices used to retain students also work to retain employees? Instructors leave this career for stressors that would sometimes seem to be able to be reduced if expectations and focus are properly applied.
I have found that many of our instructors have little or no empathy for our students under stress. I believe this is largely because they see themselves as coming up the "hard way" and are somewhat resentful of our students opportunities. Is this common among career schools?
It is sometimes difficult for school employees to understand that in one way or another we are all responsible for the retention of the students. This is realized through how we interact with them on a daily basis. It can be as easy as asking how someone is doing or as difficult as a coaching session that requires specialized assignments to help individuals succeed.
I believe many times we impose stress upon ourselves that can be avoided. Sometimes our own high performance expectations can go unmet and when reflected on cause stress. It is important I believe to make sure that we do not expect too much from ourselves in our changing environment and to be realistic about what can be accomplished.
I have found that when I ask essay type questions I can usually scan the information written for key words or phrases. If I do not see them in a particular answer that leads me to read the answer more carefully and guide the student effectively.
I have found that if the productivity software Outlook is used it can be of great benefit for to do lists by using the tasks and calendar.

Hi Lou, Currently using water flow through a hose or pipe is an effective way of teaching ohms law however I am not sure how to use a game like Clue or Risk as a foundation for a game that the students will get benefit from. I would like to learn more how to create a game based on other recognized games to create a learning activity.

I have always thought that it is a win win situation when I can have students do a puzzle or word game to help them learn new material. It is kind of like tricking them into learning, before they know it they learned something new despite in some cases what appears to be their best efforts not to. In the past I have used basic puzzles like crosswords or word searches. The more advanced games that this topic discusses intrigue me and I would like to develop a game to take the place of lecture. Do you think it is… >>>

We have found that effective training is very important to our goal of continueing to improve our instructors. The greatest challenge is trying to have the instructors make good habits from what they have learned.

I have found that many new instructors when making tests & quizzes get into an us vs. them mentality. They use a test as a way to compete with the student rather than to assess their ability to convey the information and the ability of the sytudent to apply it.
