What are the different methods you can communicate objectives to your class? How do your students know when they have been completed properly?
I think that is on target Nate, I believe your students will feel your passion if you express it. They will not only be motivated to learn but they will also have a desire to be a part of the industry as a whole.
Great point Clayton, I believe the excitement you feel for the industry and material will be absorbed and amplified by your students. They will return that excitement during their participation with the class & material. Your excitement also will give them perceived value for the lesson, this will help keep them more attentive and wanting to learn.
Hi Dr. Meers, Your first sentence I have always found is critical, it is much better to be overly prepared verses under prepared. By being over prepared you can add the ability to be flexible and allow the class to flow and deviate from the specific material slightly yet still get back on track and cover the objectives. Underprepared stifles flexibility and creativity and can make a poor environment for the learners.
How do you or will you prepare for your first class meeting of a new course?

I agree Rhonda, actually as I have been coaching our instructors recently I have been trying to get them in the habit of introspection of their teaching performance. Most of our instructors were technicians and their field of view was very self directed in their field. As an instructor/teacher/facilitator of learning peoples fields of view need to be very focused on the recipients of the education or learning. They need to ask why Billy didn't make it through class & what could they have done differently to have had a different effect & outcome. As our instructors begin to think… >>>

We have never had representatives from the student body attend. However we have several instructors that were students and they sometimes attend and they have greater empathy for what the students go through.
At our particular campus we have panel interviews that include a presentation by the candidate. We have found it beneficial to get feedback from several people including instructors and the next two levels of management. Differences of opinion are discussed in an open meeting and a consensus is taken. Even then errors are made in hiring, our trade is somewhat aggressive and it takes time to convert a person from the field to become an actual instructor in mind & body.

I believe the topic is right on the point when it states that perception is reality. It is important to make sure a school has the proper culture that will foster growth of the students as well as the faculty to attain a high level of student understanding.
What are some of the best ways for students to give their input about what they would like to see in their school in the way of help, extra circular activities, decision input & over all policies? We have tried several things but the students do not as a large group participate in them.
