Dennis, I beleive that course material should be prioritized based on the learning objectives of the course. Material that indirectly achieves the course learning objectives, should be used only if time permits. Tremayne Simpson
Kent, I do not believe that there are any guidelines regarding this type of questioning. However, I have found that it is best to allow the student to create the parameters. Instructors can provide a "general" selection of questions, which enable the student to decide how much information to devulge. For example, a good icebreaker question would be: Please provide the class or a partner in class with a summary of your experience with the (class) subject. With this the student can be brief or more expansive, depending on what they would like to share with others. Tremayne Simpson
Brant, This is a great idea. It provides an instant assessment for student knowledge, during the lecture. Tremayne Simpson

Susan, This is a great way to implement their (students) personal technology, into the classroom. Because most or all students now have smartphones, instructors must find ways to embrace their communication devices. Tremayne Simpson

April, This is an excellent idea! Conducting an "in-class" field trip, is an effective method for engaging the students. Also, it is very "budget friendly". Tremayne Simpson
Dan, I agree. In addition, I feel that it is a good practice to review the "short term" goals with the class, so that they can note their accomplishments, on a weekly basis. Tremayne Simpson
