Thank you for the suggestion. I would also add that I hand out printed material that I think they may want to refer to as time goes by, specifically websites of professional organizations so they see what ongoing activities are available.

Next month I will begin teaching the first course for a new class and I have been brainstorming all the things I want to say and do before beginning the first lecture with my first beginning group. In no particular order: Distribute the syllabus Discuss the learning objectives and my expectations Emphasize and describe professional conduct Explore the textbook Relate the story of my career Reinforce their career choice Discuss professional organizations Encourage open discussion I have them twice a week for five hours each day. Any other suggestions would be helpful
