Some of he reason for evaluating student's is for instructor's to use it as tool to see if the student's maintaining the course content and if they have a complete understanding of the topic's we as instructor are teaching. Also. it allows us to see assess the overall class performance.
Evaluation lets the student know their level of learning the course content. Students need to know how they are performing in the class so they adjust their learning style. Additionally, evaluations let the teacher know how well they are teaching. Teachers need to know how they are performing so they can adjust their teaching style.
Jason,
It's good to do real time correction activities such as you describe. I use "checking for understanding" quite frequently. As I progress through a lesson, I'll stop frequently and ask specific students (at random) to summarize the past few minutes. If unable, I go to another student at random. In this way, I can check fairly rapidly if students as a whole are getting it or if more review, discussion, or explanation is needed.

What i have found to work is when we break the students up into single groups and see if they can handle the task. If i can see that there getting thru the project good and not making any mistakes then i know they understand it. If i see someone struggling i know right then that there not grasping it. I will try to then spend more time with that student to make sure they are on the same page as everyone else so they dont feel left behind.
Ann marie,
Right. Student evaluation can also include insight into how the instructor is meeting (or not) their students needs.

Provides the instructor with a feedback of the student's progress and if the instructor should change their teaching strategies.
Lynn ,
I think evaluation is as important as providing the course material. Students value our feedback and usually take our advice and suggestions with approval and care about their successfulness.

As stated in the beginning of this module "Many things are based upon a score". As we prepare these students for a successful career part of this preparation is letting them know how they are doing. After they attend school they will be evaluated for their job performance. This is a part of our lives that we need to become comfortable with and take this as an opportunity to learn about ourselves. We can see evaluation as a negative or turn into a positive and run with it!
Jack,
True, conducting class is like a journey, and students benefit knowing how close to their destination they've come.

to know where they stand and for you to know what you need to cover during your class, also they can refled back on what they have learn from start to finsh.
Eleana,
Yes, we need to know where we may need to intervene, and students need to know where where emphasis in their study may be needed.

Evaluating a student will help you to understand there knowledge base. This will help you learn how much the student knows or understands about the subject.
Ali,
Yes. Some instructors will use grading rubrics, which I like because they provide grading information in advance and both instructor and student are bound by the guidelines. And having information in advance can also help direct students in their assignments if they know how and what is expected and how the grading will occur. It's great when there are no surprises about an assignment or course grade was derived.

Evaluating student work is one of the most important and most difficult aspects of teaching. I think that students should be given written explanations of each assignment, project and paper when the activity is introduced. The explanations should include evaluation criteria
Amir,
If we are teaching, then measuring the degree of learning that has occurred is only common sense.

to see how they are doing and to guide them better for thier success.
Barbara,
Good reasons. It's a common practice, but repetition has it's merits.

To measure the students learning and to see if I need to go over the subject matter again.
Bruce,
Truely, quizzing is an effective method to determine to what degree students received delivered course content. In general, evaluation is a "measure against the standard", as expected by the instructor. Assessments (quizzes, tests) are one way to evaluate learning. Questioning, homework assignments, surveys, and practical demonstration of skill are other ways. I have used "students write the questions", pair-share, and student-led segments of the lecture as alternative ways to evaluate learning.

One of the things I tell my students, mainly with quizes, is that it gives both of us (student and instructor) an idea of what needs to be covered more clearly. For me, it gives me an opportunity to find a way to get the missed information across to the student in a different way. For the student, it should motivate them to concentrate on that area a little more.
