What type of grading?
What is the most common type of grading in your school and why?
Hi Hank:
Distributing different components of assessments of learning does tend to even out the "highs and lows" of a students grade. What is important is that those components are appropriately weighted so that the fairness we seek is not blocked by a disproportionate amount of weight given to assignments that don't really measure the degree of learning that has occurred.

We have used the percentage system. 10% partipation, 20% test, 20% projects, etc..The system is fair to students and give instructors a lot of flexability in creating opportunites for students to succeed. I think the main reason is consistency for the students between courses.
