I know what you mean. We use an electronic gradebook with attendace also but when students are late, there is not a way to mark that in the system. I have to keep up with that manually because so many tardies eqaul an absence.
Hi Jackie:
Many schools are fortumnate to have electronic gradebooks and records so students and teacher alike can alsways find up to the minute status. But this kind of information only helps in some ways, but not all. Students need encouragement, support, advice, and direction in a way that only personal contact with the student can provide.

Keeping students informed of their status in the course helps the student to know if they are doing something right or if they need to work on something. I also think that students doing well are highly motivated to continue to do so when they are informed of their status, as are students who are not doing well. These students will be motivated to do better before the next talk with the instructor.
I find it motivates them to do well and also take responsibility for learning.
Students need to be responsible for their learning as well. By posting grades in a timely manner, they can address any concerns they have. It is also a great mid point conversation to have with them.
Student want constant feedback. It helps with their confidence to know how well they are doing within the course or what they need to work harder on.
