Hi Charles:
Confidence is a great start to being prepared as it conveys understanding, patience, and willigness to help - all attributes students look for in a good teacher.

Understanding myself helps to give me confidence in front of my classroom. The better I understand myself and my connection to the material the better I am as a teacher. It reminds me of the saying that one guest speaker said a while back, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail". This is absolutely true when it comes to knowing myself and being a better teacher because the more I understand the material and the more ready I am to present it the better teacher I am.

if we do not understand our own needs how can we understand the needs of others.if we understand our own mind and the way we function then we can relate to others in order to deliver a message.by being self conscious we then can read the mind of others and predict the outcome. this is call communication. and there are many ways of communication.

By understanding yourself as an instructional leader you can assess your strengths and weaknesses. Thus you can build on your strengths and decide how you will improve your weaknesses. In addition, the instructor gains a clearer understanding of how the students view you and how you can change their perception, or even if you want to change that perception.

Hi Laurie:
That's great. Anyone who can see a need for change and is willing to make improvements in that area is on their way to better instructional outcomes.

Hi Allana:
Great forecast for successful classes. Thanks for sharing!

Reading about the different styles of classroom leadership gave me insights into my own style as well as the styles I would like to emulate. It made me aware of my strengths and weaknesses as an instructor, giving me some goals to work on.

Having an opened mind about anything helps us to grow. As teachers it is vital to make sure that we do not get stuck with the same routine over and over again. Change teaching styles, jokes, overall presentation delivery, this will keep you challenged and motivated and stay fresh and the students will see your positive energy instead of the same old routine.

Hi Darryl:
Great. Sometimes its hard to acknowledge we have a weaker area that could benefit from improvement in some ways. But I think good teachers should not be worried about adapting, modifying, and changing some attribute about their instructional behavior if they're serious about their role as a teacher.

Hi Guy:
Interesting post regarding your approach to learning - but applicable to this forum. Anytime we can relate the lesson to real-life scenarios, I think students will tend to remember and therfore, be better prepared. I think if an instructor can gain the trust of his/her students, then the students are going to be more open to just about any form of delivery, presentation, or teaching method.

Understanding yourself enables you to play on your strenghts to deliver the material. Students will respond well to teachers that "know what they are doing", a majority of them will become connected to their learning. Our weaknesses are there, but we need to work on them and turn it to our strengths such as observing our colleagues or observing ourselves by videoing our teaching and doing the "play by play" to see where we cam improve. It also gives us the opportunity to see how are students are reacting to our delivery.

I think the saying of "you can't love someone, unless you love yourself" would answer that. In another way, I know how I learn. So, I have a very strange way of learning things that I did not see on other EDs. It is basically trying to figure out how it applies to real life. After I figured out what I was going to "get" from the class, it made it easier to understand, comprehend and recall it later for examination. That being said, coming up with creative ways to teach, explain and demonstrate with a light hearted but by-the-book attitude will after some practice be what I think a good way to convey the many classes and/or culinary methods that I will be; easy to understand, comprehend and what I hope easy to recall for testing purposes. Have a great night. Chef Guy

Hi Raymond:
Your personal connection is potentially cabavle of establishing a very positive and long lasting impression and relationship. That's great!

I feel that having the right poise and mental attitude is very important in playing the role as an instructor. Students can become distracted and unfocused if they see that the instructor is not prepared to:
-welcome them into the classroom or lab at the start of class.
-verbally engage random students as they await the class to begin.

I feel that having the students aware that I'm focusing on them as they arrive to class sets a welcoming atmosphere to the daily delivery of information.

Hi Grace:
Our weaknesses can actually contribute to achieving a better understanding of how we can become better instructors. One key is being willing to recognize the need for improvement in an specific area, and then be willing and open to making achanges, adapting, or modifying how we apply thos changes.

Regards, Barry

Understanding ourselves allows us to know our strenghts and our weaknesses

Hi Le:
Engaging students appropriately for specific classes is both challenging to conceive and rewarding to the students who benefit from the instructors efforts. Better teachers are always looking for ways to improve their delivery, preparation, and presentation skills (such as the course you're taking right now)!

If I cannot truthfully assess my own skills and abilities I will not be able to make a good decision about teaching styles. To make a class interesting and educational for my students I need to know my strengths and use them to engage the students. If I have a critical weakness that is inhibiting success then I need to be able to recognize it. Otherwise, I will never be able to correctly assess the classroom situation and develop appropriate teaching strategies to address weak areas.
