Hi Susan:
That's great you have local businesses that are relatively close to your classroom. I think the field can be invaluable to establishing a vision for the student to become and do great things within their chosen profession.

It also depends on where the school is located. we have acess to businesses within a quarter mile vicinity that are relevant to our program. Getting the students out of the classroom helps reduce boredom and gives them the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they are learning in the classroom.

Hi Evan:
You've found a good surrogate for visiting the workplace landscape. I think there is no substitute for both the experience of and the learning from out of class field trips. I can understand that your schedule may not allow for it. Maybe a guest speaker or something similar to simulate the workplace.

Regards, Barry

With such tight class schedules, I've found the only way to take a field trip is to do so virtually. show the students pictures or video to give them an idea of what's happening in the industry.

Hi Troy:
Yeah, there's nothing like a field trip off campus to motivate and stimulate interest in your students chosen field of interest. Following up with discussion in class is a great way for the students to summarize their perceptions and share what was meaningful for them. It also gives you an opportunity to guage your students' relative satisfaction with the experience.
