Patricia,
We really are called to a higher standard as educators. Trust in our abilities to instruct is in part, based on our preparation.
Barry Westling
Sean,
Great! These modules hopefully suggest ways we can make our classes more interesting and effective.
Barry Westling
Patricia,
Yes, there are class standards, and instructor standards, the least of which ought to include good planning and organized instructional plans.
Barry Westling
Larry,
Yep, and student trust and respect is also likely to deteriorate if that persists.
Barry Westling
Kathleen,
Yes, and I think students usually equate good instruction with good planning, organization, and preparedness.
Barry Westling
Patricia,
Classroom standards will end up having little meaning if the instructor puts little effort to making the standards be significant and valuable.
Barry Westling
Dawn,
Students really do appreciate when we give direction. I think most need a sense of order, and good organization is a piece of that pie.
Barry Westling
Adam,
If we regard ourselves as professional educators, then it is important to demonstrate, every day, in both word and deed.
Barry Westling
Elaine,
Yep, failure to plan will likely result in "a plan to fail".
Barry Westling
Diane,
Right. And I think an important key is appear for classes energized in a sincere way, and be willing to demonstrate that enthusiasm.
Barry Westling
Diane,
Yeah, when we gain trust, most other outcomes will accompany that.
Barry Westling
Gwen,
We hold our students accountable; we should adhere to at least the same standard.
Barry Westling
It makes the students see you as a professional, and also class time is not wasted while you are searching for papers you wanted.
Part of what we are teaching students is to be organized and prepared themselves. We should set better examples in these areas.
I started today using different color copy paper for different procedure handouts. It went over really well. Now when we go to lab, I just tell them what color sheet to bring. My life is so much easier now!
As teachers we owe it to our students to be prepared and organized. The class will go smoother as well as setting the standard for the students in your class. In, you will gain the respect of the students.
You have to be prepared to teach a class. You can't bounce all over the place. Students will know you are not prepared and you may end up contradicting yourself.
It is important for an instructor to be organized and prepared to teach each class because it sets a standard for the class. Setting expectations are critical to successfully implementing instruction. An organized and prepared instructor will garner the respect of their students by readily having material prepared and ready to teach. By being organized and prepared the instructor not only sets a standard but becomes a role model for student on the importance of being prepared.
Being organized and well prepared will help to gain the respect of your students as well as setting the standard for the students.
1) Saves time
2) projects an attitude of preparation - when required of students you are setting a good example. don't ask them to do something you do not take time to do yourself
3) Reinforces that you are the manager of the class and the time. Student centered but instructor led learning.
