Bringing community into the classroom

I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing in guest speakers or going on a field trip with my students to bring more knowledge on the field into them as a class. I have found this very helpful in the learning process. I also keep in mind the mission of our college by understanding how our courses will fit into the college and their different classes. Power points done the correct way is also a very helpful learning process for my students. If it's printed out too small or too pale or boring, my students aren't as interested in the topic. If I print on bright colors and keep it at a max slides of 5 they are a bit more interested.

Hi Lisa:
Classes are a community. So as teachers responsible for student learning, we want to make sure the "community standards" are followed, and outcomes for success as determined by assuring that all students in the community satisfactorily complete objectives and learning outcomes. We want the best community members comining out of our classes.

I agree that we need to make sure that we use different ways to draw the students attention to the handouts and homework that we apply to our classes.

Hi Meghan:
Great! The student community involves as many varied settings, situations, and circumstances as the diverse population we call school, or class or learning environment. These days we have so many tools to convey concepts, ideas and principles coupled with enhanced methods of providing skill development, critical thinking, and effective outcomes. The creative instructor is truely challenged to bring the best of available resources togther and weave a instructional plan that results in productive learning and understanding. I think it's great to play a small part in the contribution to a students learning.

Regards, Barry
