Color handout papers

I feel that when reading about using colored handouts that it is a wonderful idea. Using colors helps me able to get the students attention and keep it when passing out papers. The brighter the color, I find is more eye catching so they tend to go longer with being quit and looking over the information. I have noticed also makes the student think that this piece of paper is more important than all the white papers that had been passed out. White is so dull. It is also very helpful when refering back to a paper that has been colored. I use the fact that it is more colorful to be able to show the importance of the information that is on the colored paper.

Hi Chara,
Color does add dimension and vibrancy to most things. Even animals and insects use color to arttract, defend, or thrive within their environment (so it's gotta work for our sensory world as well!) You're though, too much, unbalanced, or extremes can actually distract more than enhance presentation or delivery presentation, such as PPT slides. As you know, less is more, I think with PPT slides, two, three fonts at most with a good background color used consistently works best in my opinion. PPT is a tool. We want to emphasize the information, not the tool that provides it!

As a beginning instructor, I find this tip of using colored paper, or even colorful fonts, an interesting and helpful method. It makes sense to want to make information standout to students and imprint it into their minds. I've started to incorporate this technique. However, as a former graphic designer of PowerPoint backgrounds, I also am wary of it because many times the use of multiple colors and fonts is over used, and the creativity of color is at the expense of having handouts look professional. Any pointers to help balance the need for color and a professional look?

Hi Lisa:

Using color, or the student’s senses during lesson plans is another great way of employing as many teaching methods as we can in hopes of addressing as many learning styles as we can. We understand that most students learn by a combination of these styles.

If we can use teaching methods that address these styles, we increase the chance of a student understanding and retaining the material.

I had the same thought. Cost is definitely a factor here, and I'm not sure the administration would go along. It does seem like a great idea, though.

color handouts is a great idea I have not used this before. I will be trying this.

I love the idea of colored paper, it's fun. It's easy to organize. It's easy to have the students find what topic we are discussing .

thats a great idea especially when you can pick out different color handouts specifically and not have to rummage through a bunch of white papers. I wonder how cost effective it is though

I like using colored handout for many reasons. I agree that the students tend to read the information more carefully on them and it does make it easier to find specific handouts by referring to them by color vs content. In the field I teach in we tend to cordinate the color with the subject i.e. Pink for CBC's, Yellow for Urinanalysis etc. It helps the students keep track of the different lab tests they are running in class.

I think color is a great idea to grab the student’s attention for any handout if budget allows.

I like the use of color for lots of things to help me stay organized. I often use different colors of folders or labels or paper in order to keep things separate and organized. I can really see how using the different colors for handouts can help the students also.

Hi Kelly:
Just another example hoe organization and the use of senses (color), something simple like that can be significant and effective in the classroom.

This has been suggested in the past and I am going to start using it this quarter. I printed my addendums on colored paper, in hopes that the students will realize it is more than something to put in their binder.

I love this suggestion. I will be trying this in my next term which starts on Jan. 10th. Curious to see the results, if any, that I can see or write about in my knew journal that I will be starting i this term as well.
