Hi Earl:
The nice thing about what you've described, is that it may give the student a renewed interest in the topic and let them ask questions to others to get a fresh perspective.

Hi Michael:
Right! Using these can give the student a renewed sense of enthusiasm in the subject matter you've been discussing.

Getting to see (and maybe apply) what they are learning in class to real world situations. Schools may not have some of the resources available in house that they can go out and use in the field.

Hi Sara:
These kind of events can help renew a student's interest in the topic. And, like you described, it may give them a chance to speak to someone else, and gain a different perspective.

Relevance to the selected feild chosen.

Guest speakers validate information delivered in the classroom. Also the students observation of the field of study and operations can give a better of perspective on hands on operations.

Field trips allow the students to view their desired outcome of the course being applied in the real world. They will see what the type of career really entails and enables them to ask questions of other professionals in the same career.
Guest speakers, again, put a face to their desired career. They are able to ask specific questions and receive different answers and perspective than from the instructors.

This is a requirement of our school for each group of students. They love it! They love to hear another person's perspective on the field and they enjoy seeing what they are working toward in action. They always return from field trips with a very positive attitude-almost revived to put 100% toward their goal again.

It allows the student to have an application of their learning. It takes them away from the monotony of the classroom and gives them motivation and understanding of what lies in their future.

One thing also is that when a field trip comes to your location, always be friendly and try and answer any questions the students have. We have several a year and I really enjoy talking to future students and getting to answer all of their questions.

I believe the benefit of field trips would be an opportunity to see what a students education can do for them. To see what it is like to apply what they have learned. I work in a practice that is nice enough to allow me to take my students there for field trips. The students get a kind of "behind the scenes" look at how a medical practice runs. They also get a guest speak from the physician, and the office manager. I feel like this is a great way to prepare them for the real world of Medical Assisting.

Hi David:
Right! These can serve to renew interest in the topics at hand, and possibly give the student a chance to talk to new people other than the instructors.

Hi Joel:
I guess that's true - especially for career oriented classes. Usually, these kinds of activities serve to renew interest in the topics at hand.

Both approaches wed the classroom experience with the profession. This can be clarifying and motivating with students.

Hi Gail:
Absolutely! They may also serve to re-engage a student's interest in the topics you've been discussing, and like you point out, offer a fresh persepctive of the material as well.

Students like to experience different scinerios in their field of studies.By taking students on field trips and/ or having guest speakers, these activities can enhance their learning capacity than having someone else telling them about the field they are getting ready to be a part of. Visiting the employment site to observe reality in action can be a wake-up call for many students.

It's nice to mix things up a bit. Listening to someone else speak and share their unique experiences gives more information to the students. Also, seeing an actual work environment in the field the students are interested in helps to give them perspective as well as to see if this is still something they are truly interested in.

Hi Kurt:
Another nice thing about field trips is that it usually serves to renew interest in the main concepts you've been discussing in class. And, the student might get the chance to ask questions to other people for a fresh perspective.

Hi Renae:
Excellent - guest speakers are a great way to bolster morale in the class, and possibly renew interest in the topic at hand.

Regards, Barry

Great idea. Students get to see and hear what other people do in the field they are studying. Wheather they listen to a speaker or get to visit a location of the subject they are studying, the students get to see, smell, and hear which is exciting to them.
