Field trips allow the students to see real world applications and how what they are learning will correlate in their chose profession. It also can reinforce a lecture or a discussion that was had in class.
Hello Cindy,
I would agree that seeing the lights shine in students faces after time in the real world of applied knowledge usage is great! I teach online classes with students having different time zones, I would like to find a way to do online field trips that can be recorded for viewing. This is my search to may this study real for my need of online.
In addition to the obvious answer described in the tutorial, firld trips and guest speakers provide some variation in the learning experience. The students may in fact be exposed to the same information that the instructor has already articulated previously. The second time around, it may appeal to a different learning center (in their brains). They may have had time to assimilate the original information, and so it becomes a familiar or recurrent concept, which can be easier to grasp, especially if it's in context.
Going on field trips and having a guest speaker breaks the routine of class room lecture.

I agree that fieldtrips and quest speakers are a great way to add variety and interest. My question is "How do you find good ones, especially in a rural setting?"
Scheduling a field trip early in their admission to a Career college helps them to have general exposure to a profession and assess whether this is the right career choice for them as they are given an opportunity to see professionals at work and career skills that will be needed. Scheduling a field trip midway reinforces that training and introduces them to companies and how they actually conduct their operations more in-depth. Recently we had an alumni of our Animation Program as a guest speaker. It was quite successful in that we had an amazing turn out since it provided students with a reality check from "one of their own."
I just recently had a guest speaker come to my Marketing class. The great benefit to having a guest speaker is that he was able to provide my students with real world, cutting edge information about what companies are doing today to attract and keep customers.
Guest speakers absolutely bring excitement into the classroom about the specific field as well as informs the studetns about the industry.
Hi Keveka:
Exactly - it gives the student another perspective, and a chance to speak with another representative of their chosen profession.

Hi Sarrah:
Very true - as it applies to career based courses. On the other hand and in general, field trips and guest speakers can give ANY class group a new persepective about the topic at hand. And, this is a great way to mix it up, especially for career courses.

Hi Brandy:
Perfect! And, especially for career oriented courses, it allows the student a chance to ask questions about the content from another resource besides the main instructor.
