Hi Lori:

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "at least two ways to present?".

Regards, Barry

every new start, the students all learn differently, so at times you must have at least two ways to present.

Hi Vonia:

I think the advent of PPT has been outstanding for the educational community. Unfortunately, there are real creative ways to use the resource and some less effective methods.

Even proffesionally produced slides from the textbook editor can be ineffective if not carefully integrated into your lesson plan for a given topic.

For instance, having students sit through several hours of PPT slides without much interaction with the instructor rarely instills much meaningful, long-term learning unless it's planned very carefully.

Can you think of other ways the effectiveness of PPT can be unitentionally diminished?

Regards, Barry

I select a particular form of media to help demonstrate a certain skill or task the class will need to master to be suceesful in their career field or profession. I mostly choose power point because it comes with the books and study material for the course and it usually includes examples and daigrams that give the students a better example or exlpanation of the material to learn and remember.

I think being alert to the students participation and being able to change delivery as needed is an important skill. One that needs constant improvement.

Stephen:

Right! Every student has a prefered or primary way they learn best. As instructors, we also have our prefered delivery style as well. We have to be careful we're not doing what is easiest for us either.

Getting to that place where you are able to connect with all of your students by relating to them as individuals will take time and energy, but will ultimately serve your students better.

Nolan:

It is true that as instructors we each have our preferences. But we need to be cognizant of the learning styles (and learning needs) of your students.

Sometimes when students complain they "just don't get it", it's because the teacher is merely repeating the information the same way. That's not going to get the student to learn.

Effective instructors will try to understand their student's individual needs, then relate the subject matter in the manner the student is able to receive. It's difficult and time consuming, yet that is our commitment we make when we teach.

Victor:

It's so easy to fall into routines and a pattern for providing classess a certain way that effective instructors have to be willing to really go out of their way to observe their environment in order to evaluate and choose the best resources for a given class. That effort takes time, thought, and willingness. Too frequently those ingredients are absent.

Unfortunately, the students are not always able to convey meaningful feedback so the responsibility falls back to the instructor.

by your assessment each and every class ia different so not one media will be suffiecient

Understanding the students learning style is important to your delivery method and choice of media.

I would say what in most convienent to you, and what it is you like to use the most. In my mind it depends only upon what you are the most comfortable with

Hi John:

Yes John, all persons have their own learning style and as instructors, we can develop a variety of teaching styles that can be applied to learners of all types. Reliance on just what comes naturally is not likely to achieve the results most teachers desire.

Regards, Barry

I like to choose a veriety of things to appeal to all students, not just the ones that use my personal learning style

Most would be convience and different ways to be learning is more exiting.

Dr. Harris-Ray:

These are all good considerations.

While we all want and hope the best media is being used we may need to take measures to assess and determine if that media is current, relevant, applicable, timely, and closely/directly related to the predefined student learning outcomes.

Regards, Barry

Ease of use, modernness, and the best media to accurately relay messages/visuals to my students.

At the end o fthe day, the instructor's connection with the students is what makes the differance

Well I love using powerpoint because it provides a visual for the students and organizes my notes.

I agree you need to apeal to the student & keep it interesting

Hi Steve:

Your organizational approach is quite systematic!

I try to remember that students have their own learning style preference. So that's where your 3rd step would be especially important - engaging and participating at the level they're most likely to learn best. I also find that I don't always know with certainty which learning style is dominant. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error.
