Hi Laurie:
Great! Breaking up a learning session with a variety of media is certainly going to add some pizazz to the lesson. Engaged students always do better than "just present".

Regards, Barry

Because of the variety of learning styles among our students, it is important to vary the way that material is delivered. Lecturing every day is a sure way to lose students who are not auditory learners. Use of various kinds of media adds variety and surprise to the daily routine and is always welcomed by students.

Hi Raymond:
I'm sure you've found how to maximise your rather limited resources. But depending on the subjects, these media could work perfectly well in most instances. Colored markers, pre-written white board notes or drawings, and student-at-the-board are a few of the ways some teachers liven up the white board experience.

Regards, Barry

A white board and written matieral on paper are the main types of media that I use in class. The students in class are expected to prepare for the day with the written matieral and the white board is typically used to reiterate important information that will be important during lab time. There are no computer projection screens in the lab, so being able to adapt to the surroundings certainly plays into how demonstrations and instructions are shown.

Hi LE:
Great reflection. I think many teachers strive to experiment and find what works best for specific assignments, and we're all at the mercy of having access when we need it. It can very unpredictable. Some assignments (and related media) I've found to be extremely useful was discovered accidently when my planned activity was not available. Those assignments are now incorporated into my regular lesson plans.

I hate to admit it. But often the selection is dictated by the conditions. In my class this afternoon, I used the whiteboard because the projector died. I usually try to get the most interactive and interesting (from the student point of view) presentation tools that I can find. Sometimes, small group activities, othertimes PowerPoint Lecutures. It is all a process of trying to leverage the conditions and tools that i have have available. As I have gained experience, I have noticed that I can find more tools available that I overlooked in the past.

Hi Catherine:
Great! The realization of many media choices and the willingness to experiment to see what works can only produce better students learning sessions.

Understanding your particular student needs, is very helpful in selecting a particular media delivery method. First comes the understanding of student needs, then tailoring a delivery method to fit those needs.

It is a great support for all of us. There are so many different instructional media, if one media does not work for your class you can try a different one and get better result.
Also, more I use them, more comfortable I became.

Hi Daniel:
PPT's can add a lot to a class. The challenge is bring a balance - not too many slides all at once, and not too much information on a slide all at once. But how nice we can make our lectures look!

Regards, Barry

I like powerpoint presentations. Students seem to appreciate having them in class to supplement my lectures. It give them something visually to focus on (plus my handwriting on the white board is terrible).

Hi Justin:
Relying on past assignments that have been successful sounds like a terrifc idea. Most things visual will be better retained, even for kinesthethic or auditory learners. Good luck with your classes!

Regards, Barry

I like Models and or Power Point to relate ideas and tranfer knowledge of certain tasks to my students. I will save projects form onte class to the next that I think have value to the students just starting in order to reinforce a new concept and roidea. I also like to show picture and details on slide that aare specific to the nature of the assignment to give students a better understanding of expected outcomes. Whenever possible I use the models and slides from classes rather then from an outside source. The students enjoy making the models and seeing their particular product showcased.

Hi Mark:
I agree matching media with lesson content is important. I think good teachers can make the most out of jus about any resources. That said, as you've pointed out, there better choices for some topics.

Regards, Barry

the media choosen must be in direct relationship to th material. Some information just does not lend itself well to powerpoint or handouts. On the other hand some material presented in a powerpoint presentation can be very effective. handouts alos can serve as a great learning tool if used properly.

Hi Stacy:
Great. There are dozens of media choices and a variety of alternative ways to use each. Good treachers will be on the lookout for new and interesting media for improved delivery and presentation.

Hi Maureen:
Sounds like of the resources you're using, they're working out OK. There are really dozens of different media and alternative uses for each. Good instructors will alwys be looking for ways that improve their classroom delivery techniques.

I guess I mostly choose types of media for my class based on the content. In some cases, a powerpoint is fine. In other cxases, i use a written example on the projector for the hands-on portion as a class, and I give the students their own copy. Then, I have the same document on another sheet with the correct answers in those bubbles. This way, i have hands-on and lecture with visuals.

I use a white board for most of my class presentations because it seems to be best suited in the kitchen classroom that I teach in.

I am able to write the day's plan on the board in addition to major techniques and vocabulary words for the day.

When summarizing the day I sometimes use the board to make points about the major events that occured during production whether positive or negative.
