The goal of educating students is having them utilize the knowledge and skills they have acquired in meaningful ways. If you are educated you then have the ability to progress further in that subject or profession because you have the core understanding to think and use what you have learned.

Jeff,
Good point. And somehow if we can impart a desire for lifelong learning, our students will probably never be uninformed or out of work. Certainly, a more satisfying life will be a result.

What they do for employment will change according to conditions. If they love the process of learning, it will help them adapt to those changes. I think that should be the goal no matter what your discipline.

Cenek,
Yes, of course. And if we can also give them help with life skill and soft skills, these will help them keep their employment once they snag a job.

The goal of educating students is to prepare them to enter the workforce (gainful employment).

Rasiel,
Yeah, it would be wonderful if we could provide life skills that students could use to benefit them not only in their professional career, but also in the backside of their life, contributing to improved family, marital, and personal satisfaction and happiness.

Abayomi,
Awesome listing of ideal learning goals. Hopefully we're able to accomplish many of these with at least some our students.

Over the passage of three decades observing children walk into my schools, I have determined that I need them to be lifetime learners, be enthusiastic, be inclined to take chances, be empowered to problem-solve and reason critically, be prepared to view things creatively, be capable to work autonomously and with others, be imaginative, care and aspire to give back to their society, persevere, have self-respect and integrity.

James,
Getting students to think independly, analyzing information, and making evidence-based decisions are determinants of success in the workplace.

Jeanne,
Good ideals to set as target goals.

The goal of educating students is to provide the platform for skill development and to create better learners. As we impart our expertise we also aim to create forward thinkers who then apply the skills they have learned to new and revolutionary tasks. We strive to open these young minds to all of the available avenues in which they can apply their newly acquired abilities.

I believe the goal of educating students is to help prepare them for career success, create life-long learners, instill confidence, and help them understand and apply what they are learning.

Salma,
Sure, without application, knowledge is limited in it's capacity to enrich.

Dawn,
Your third goal is perhaps the most beneficial for providing the foundation to life-long learning.

Adam,
Yes, I agree. Job training goes beyond mere skills training. Today's work setting requires "good relating and professionalism", besides good technical-work skills.

The goal should always be to prepare the students in such a way that they become successful in their career. Just the pursuit of knowledge is not enough; how that knowledge gets applied in real life is what the students need to become adept at.

The goal of educating students goes far beyond teaching class material. I strive to teach what I call functional education bringing in rela life skills and working with students to not only help them learn the material, but also become better students. Many times I will review test bank questions that I will not place on a test. The reason for this is to teach students how to take tests, how to think critically, and gain a better understanding of the tought process so that they can carry that skill throughout life.

I view my goal of educating students as multi-level.
First, the foundation of basic concepts
Second, the inter-relationships between the concepts to meld into a larger, more inclusive knowledge base
Third, the application of the concepts into real life situations that they would experience in their chosen careers.
