Hi Daniel:
Something else to consider - if instructor's use as many media types as they can, it may help address as many learning styles that there are.

I still love the old fashioned Overhead projectors! I also use the white board. I like the power points, but many times, the computers go down and I do not have 20 or 30 minutes to waste waiting. All I need is a lightbulb for the overhead projector.
This is true. I use mostly powerpoint to supplement my lecture, but I prefer to make my own. I've found that the powerpoints provided by the publisher cover things I don't want to cover and leave points out that I DO want covered! I think creating your own makes the presentation much more personal and tailored to your lecture.
Hi Barbara:
In this day and age, the technique you are describing is great, especially for reaching a traditionally younger crowd of students.

Hi Lawrence:
To piggy-back on one of your comments, one thing instructors are forced to do is constantly ask themselves "is this working"? In other words, how we present the information to some groups may not be appropriate for others.

Hi Lawrence:
You make a strong point here - it is important to address as many learning styles as possible. The method you are describing, including the V.A.K. theory is paramount to making this idea stick.

Hi Lawrence:
Additionally, using as many resources as we can may help address as many learning styles that exist in every learning environment.

When I select media for content delivery I make sure the media I select will hold the students attention and that it is the appropriate selction to support the course content without distorting the message.

It depends on what I am presenting. I'm a hands on kind of guy. I like to bring out equipment, have the students look at me and say "What is that!" and by end of the presentation they say "That wasn't not too bad"! But the best is that"Aha" moment they get.
Hi Aldgenette:
Sounds like an effective method. In general, instructors should try to incorporate as many teaching styles as they can so to address as many learning styles as possible.

The days of overheads and writing on the boards are long gone my friends. This current generation needs instant gratification both in and outside the classroom - so the material needs to be simulative and presented in a format that utilizes at least 2 of the 5 senses to capture your audience. Animation, PPTs, Video, in-class exercises and experiments, etc. are all useful tools. One of the best ideas to come along in my Microbiology class, have the students present an 8-10 minute video of a public service announcement on the germ of their choice! The class enjoys doing the project and the entire class learns when they are presented on the last day of class before the final. You need to grasp newer ideas like this or you will lose these kids in lecture every day. SPICE IT UP!
It depends on the class as to what media of instruction I select. If it is a business class I will tend more on using PowerPoint, because it included the main points of the chapter being discussed. If it is a computer application class, I will use a projector which will show the actual application chapter as a hands on tool.
Hi Sandie:
That's such a great idea. Too bad ther aren't more sites like this that show a person what to expect in a given field.
The site you mentioned would probably be interesting to anyone in medical training.

Hi David:
Additionally, we might all consider the use of MANY types of media in order to best serve the idea that students all learn in multiple and different ways.

Hi Cory:
Great. I think for many classes this is one of the best uses for PPT, especially when combined with other learning resources.
We need to keep the students focused and attentive. That's not easy, especially if classes arte longer than a couple of hours at a time. PPT has a way of making topics a little more interesting.

I use power point slides to hightlight key points I want the studetns to know are importatnt and also for me to use as points to further discuss.
Hi Robert:
Indeed, not every learning environment is practical to utilize every teaching method. In general, the more methods we can use, the grater the chance we will address every type of learning style.
For online programs, one way we can try to do this is to have discussions about the content, which asks the students to articulate what you've been discussing.
Regards, Barry
I like to use publisher PowerPoint presentations. I am careful not to read the slides and I find that the slides halp keep me on track and to avoid omitting important points. Often the same slide will be on the screen for several minutes while discussion takes place. I also use a white board to illustrate specific examples. I will often be using PowerPoint and the white board at the same time.
I incorporate a smart board with Power Point presentation. The smart board allows highlight specific information in a cretive way. This aids visual learners. You can use the smart board to use Power Point and bring an internet site onto the board at the same time. The internet site can be used to demonstrate procedures discussed with the Power Point slide listing a step by step guide.
Hi Tom:
That's a great method to re-introduce stuffs that may have been forgotten. One thing we can also do during this kind of activity (or any kind) is to finish every new information with a statement ike "XYZ is the primary point here, does everyone understand this primary point"?
