It depends on what course I plan to deliver.
For Law and Ethics, I use powerpoint presentation, video presentations, Q & A handouts measuring competency requirements, case analysis,
For medical transcription, I use overhead projector to explain the concept of transcribing dictated material using the software Express Scribe, (show students how to navigate the speed and volume adjustment, students are also required to use earphones, explaining to students the importance of acquiring transcription skills by first enhancing their keyboard speed, letting the students listen to various dictation materials with varying speed.
For Career Develoment or Career Services, I normally would use powerpoint presentation with video presentations, Q & A on critical thinking activities.
I believe that selection of media entirely depends on what course and objectives we are trying to assess and accomplish.
Hi Robert:
This sounds like a great way of using a "variety" of techniques. Studies show that doing this helps adult learners learn best due to the fact we all learn in different ways.

Hi Billie:
The selection process of instructional media is nearly directly related to the course objectives. A varied assortment of choices should be selected for maximum student learning.

Selecting the proper media ensures a better learning outcome for the students.
Hi Howard:
Nice style - smooth! I think using the white board along with PPT makes the use of my time. I also have students come to the board and answer or provide poibts to be discussed. Keeping them engage is everso important.

Hi Sandy:
Yes, variety is really jey to keeping the students attention and focus. Routine is not bad - in may professions their job will have routine procedures. An there's nothing like repitition to assist with retention. But as a learning strategy, the more variety we can include, the more interesting the class will be.

Hi Andrea:
Any presentation style can be effective if we remember to use a variety of teaching and learning techniques. No matter how interesting a presentation is, people will start to tune out after awhile. That's the time to switch gears and do something new.
Regards, Barry
Hi Lamarr:
No matter what we do in our classes, it's important to use a variety of media sources, activites, assignments, etc. to address as many learning styles as we can.
Regards, Barry
I like to include a mixture of turning point and power point slides together during the discussion and before completing an exercise, during class time. I think these learning tools provides a variety during class; however, this to can become routine for the students. I have found that it is important to have a variety of activities for the students.
I select PPT for content delivery. In fact, I use PPT for all my classes. I provide a copy of the PPT slides to my students after each lecture. The students don’t have to take notes in class so they can concentrate on class discussion. I don’t read off the slides. I expand the topics on the slides. I have a remote control so I’m free to walk around the room.
Hi Cynthia:
Very good - mixing up activities with a variety of learning exercises helps keep students interest and attention. And keeping them active will help retention, focus, and engaged in the course material.
Regards, Barry
I like to use a variety of media, although I am still learing the proper use of power point . I like mixed media with using the internet to find a particular story or resource. I will pull up reference from our books to show the students related articles from research and case studies. Dvd's are also a good sources im my field Massage Therapy.
Hi Nisa:
Great complementary use of senses and student engagement. Color with just about anything enhances memory and retention of information. Getting students up to the board to draw helps also, which I'm sure you've done in past lessons.
Regards, Barry
Hi William:
Great. Determining how best essential and critical information can be presented to the current class does take much thought, planning, creativity, effort, and our enemy, time.
Regards, Barry
Hi Kellan:
Good interaction. Reading from slides is perhaps the least desirable way to teach a class.
Regards, Barry
in selecting meia for the content that im delivering i be sure to incorporate all the key subject topics on the power point. students get bored with the same stuff quickly so i try to keep them motivated by discusssing the topics as we go thru the slides
Hi Quebec:
Student learning objectives (SLO's) define what is to learned and how to achieve that learning. By not straying far from the SLO's, an instructor can plan the most helpful and practical methods to meet the topic outcomes.

My media content is based on my audience. Many times, students prefer something that is engaging and interactive. Whereas at other times, students enjoy engaging in discussion that promotes interaction with their peers on various topics. Regardless of the age group, students enjoy being presented their learning material in a manner that is both enjoyable as well as stimulating.
I mostly use the whiteboard with different color markers to emphasize certain points. As I teach in the medical field there are many drawings of anatomy. To teach those I employ both transparents and hand drawings to help students fully visualize the structures. I have them draw as I draw so they better understand the material. In addition, I occasionally use powerpoints to show animations of the structures to, again, enhance absorption of the material.
The selection of instructional media must take several things into consideration. What are the outcomes? Who are the students? How can the material best be presented and where is it being presented? In my experience, instructors have over used Powerpoint presentations. If I were training students to perform a task, Powerpoint can be one visual aide but it becomes more effective when a video is used prior to hands on training. The students learn by seeing then doing.
