when I explain something new and I see scrunched up faces, I ask if maybe one of the students would like to explain it in a different way, to get the class involved.
Andrea:
Many times, I'll reach a point in the lecture or discussion and say " so...if this is the case, why does xxxxhapen?", or something similar. Like once every thirty minutes at least. It keeps students on their toes and expecting to be called on.

You are absolutely right. Even though students might not indicate that they dont understand something its always good to ask questions and get everyone involve to confirm that they are getting the material. You'll be surprised to know how often students will just nod along as if they do understand when they really dont.
Hi Rebecca:
Good idea! Even if there is no outward sign any student is having difficuty, it's a good idea to periodically ask a student to explain or re-state some point being made. If one has a question, probably othersw will also. This gives a chance to clarify, reinforce the correct information, and recognize the student for their effort (whether they were correct or not).
