Getting the attention of students
What is the best way to gain and keep the attention of your students?
How do you determine how much time to spend on a topic?
Talita,
Great perspective! I like to think if we can keep this old adage in mind, students will remain attentive: "What's in it for me?" This can involve stories about the worl setting, challenges they may face, how to deal with profession-specific situations that will help them in the job market. When students can internalize and personalize the information they're getting, they'll be attentive and focused.

The best way that I gain attention of my students is by having the approach of humor and respect. Be ready with the knowledge that is to be obtain from you to the students. Remember make it easier for these individuals to approach as well respecty you. If subject matter are difficult states this and try to assist them. Work hard to do a good job. Remember the focus has to remain on the student and the education they are expecting to obtain from you.
I know catching their attention at the beginning of the course has a greaater challenge of them during the course. They realize the things they knkow and don't know. Now they are trainable....
I think adding a variety of styles keeps students interested. A little lecture, a few question and answers, asking students to read the answer to the class keeps them focused. They have the answer in front of them if they keep up. Even the "bad" (I am really not saying any student is bad..)students can have right answer if they are following along and once they have a few successfull experiences/answers they tend to be more intersted.
