It helps you evaluate the level of understanding and knowledge a student has initially.

I've not used pretesting before either, but what a great idea. It's definitely something I will employ in the future.

pretest gives an instructor an Idea where students stand af far as their knowledge.

I use pretests in medical terminology and that is effective in gearing the class to learning the most they can.

It gives an advantage in helping to determine whether the students need "refreshing" of their basic skills, before you try to give them new information.
Learning is like a building, a good foundation supports the blocks of knowledge which we hope to pile on them!

we use the pretest to see if thwere any area we need to spend more time on or if they already know the information there is no need to spend anymore time on that matter

In my experience, the way I promoted pretests had a lot to do with the student's reception and perception. I let them know that it was just another tool to help them be successful.

It helps by giving you a starting point to build from. Another benefit is that it gives the students a sense of preparedness for what's to come and that can be calming for them. It also builds trust between you and the students, trust that the instructor is making us aware and trust that the student's are following up.

I instruct an experience heavy group of students, therefore the pretest is a major part of determining course pace on specific topics. The other aspect we use the pretest information for is to provide insight of the class to our guest speakers.

Pre-tests assist the student in their material preparation.Students develop more confidence regarding the real test, if they can ace the pre-test, they will be confident that the real test will be a breeze. On the other side of the coin, if someone did not do very well on the pre-test this will encourage them to study harder for the upcoming test.

Hi Tammy:
I use pretest now and agin, but not all the time. Mostly, I use it when I'm unsure of where my students are performing. Here, then, I can make samll adjustments to add emphasis where it can do more good for students.

Pretests can help you determine what your students know and don't know and also what just needs to be reviewed and what needs to be retaught.

I think using pretests would be a good idea in some courses that I currently teach. It is definitely something I will consider doing from this point forward.

Hi Teresa:
Pretesting can be done both at the beginning and end of a course. It can also precede a test to see what areas students still need work on. It's a great tool that more teachers outh to use.

Hi Bernie:
Institution policies have to be followed. Nonetheless there is merit in pretesting as an instructional tool.

We're not allowed to used pre-tests, other than the one to be admitted to the school.

By using a pretest, the teacher can see how much the students have retained. It may be necessary for the teacher to reteach a couple of things before the students take that final exam.

Hi Richard:
Students usually don't mind taking a test if they know it's not graded and will help the teacher know where to put additional emphasis for greater student understanding.

Hi Melanie:
Understanding at what level students are at in valuable. I use pretesting anytime I'm unsure about this.

Pretests help us assess the background knowledge and experience of our students. It helps the insructor anticipate how much time may need to be spent on different topics within the lecture.

lets students know of testable materials to be covered
