Pretesting helps the instructor know were the students are in the material

Hi Diedra:
I use pretesting when I don't know what level my studfents are prepared at.

Regards, Barry

I am more in favor of pretest now that I have used this approach. It saves time as I prepare for class presentations. I think it is a win/win situation for both the instructor and student. Valuable instruction is occurring

I have never used pretesting but am considering using it next quarter. Since I teach Intro to Computers it is important for me to know where I need to start when teaching this course. I have found that I’ve had students in my class whom have never sat in front of a computer and some students that a lot of experience using computers. Giving a pretest can help me pair up the stronger students with the less experienced much earlier than after their first project.

I find a pertest helps me when the subject matter is math related. This makes me aware of what areas I may need to concentrate on with supplemental lesson plans and worksheets.

Hi Harriet:
Yeah, it can be helpful. I use it if I'm unsure what level my students are performing at. So, don't use it all the time, but it's a great tool when I do.

Hi Dan:
I use pretesting at times, mostly when I'm unsure of where the student cohort as a whole is performing. If it's a n introductory type of class, I usually don't because I know already most student are going to need a lot of emphasis on most course objectives.

But pretesting is a valuable tool and I would recommend it when determing where the emphasis of a class should be.

Hi Dawn:
Pretests have their place. I don't use it every time or every class. It works best for me when I am unsure where my students are at. The results can be quite helpful.

I accept the idea of a pretest especially with the Introduction to Computer classes. Obtaining this information allows the instructor to prepare their lesson plan to fit the needs of the students and more specifically this will enhance the students learning experience.

I think a pretest as a planning tool is a wonderful idea. I think it would give the instructor a sense of how the class is performing as a whole; and it would allow the instructor to make a plan to review those common concepts that students keep missing. I have done post lecture quizzes, but after reading this info and everyone's input,I think that I will start to do a pretest, so that, I can evaluate the class and make plans throughout the course to incorporate previously learned material so that students will have the opportunity to understand the material.

More often then not, a class will present with a wide variety of individual student knowledge foundations. Instructors must be able to assess and determine a point from which to begin teaching, and to what level of knowledge the students in the class have arrived in the course with. The pretest gives an indication of this, and a basis on which to determine the level of instruction from which to begin.

I have never done this before, nor thought of this idea. I am going to incorporate a pretest and post test to let students see how their knowledge base increased!

Pre-testing allow you to know what a student needs help on.

It help you know were your students are and how to assist the trouble spots

Prestest can be used as tool for course development, lesson planns.

Hi Clifton:
When I use pretesting (and I don't use it all the the time), it helps me clarify or modify the planned lessons so I can emphasize areas that are in more need and not put as much weight on information students seem to already know pretty well.

Pretests are a teriffic tools for establishing the pace of instruction. You find the points of acceleration and deceleration in presenting the course materials. It helps one be a real instructor of students

They give tyhe studenyt something to do.

Pre-tests can help when you are teaching a class that may not have requirements from the college, but students do need to have some knowledge of the subject matter.
