A critical Thinking activit ythta I like to incorporate into my class is when I teach a course such as Health Information Management Principles I like to lay out scenarios for them as if they were working in the office. I pose a scenario and ask what if you were the manager, what would you do. Often times students come up with a number of great responses and sometimes they don't. That's when i make the topic relatable to soemwhere they ahve worked. Once you can do that, not only can you tell where the students are with their understanding you can assist them in understanding the topic itself.

Hi Dan,
Great ways to prepare your students for the real world. Students need to learn how to research and think out of the box so that they can be successful.

Hi Shannon,
This is an excellent activity to help prepare students for the real world.

Hi Shelly,
Yes case studies/scenarios are definitely preparation to promote critical thinking.

Hi Nelida,
That's right! Being able to think critically is crucial on the job. Scenarios/case studies help prepare students on how to think critically.

I teach massage therapy, and I use the following exercise in classes like pathology, special populations, and therapeutic. In pathology, I will allow the students to choose a pathology from the chapter that we are working on. The student is to research that pathology and create a treatment plan based off of the chosen pathology. They list common medications and side effects of those medications, indications, contraindications, caution areas, and massage techniques based off of their reserach. The students then present their treatment plan to the class and as a group we discuss the plan that they have laid out.

I am currently teaching a dental clinic lecture. I provide my students with different case studies; they are broken into small groups where they discuss and determine appropriate patient care and recommended treatment depending on the scenario. This allows the student to use their critical thinking skills while they actively learn..A win win!

Hi Harry,
When students can do something and explain the why behind what they have done that means they have grasp the concept.

I am currently catering and buffet class in a culinary school, and every day is mostly active learning with our student because of the food production they learn during class. however they also have lecture and projects, sometime individual or in groups and I try to meke them research on they own prices of food, equipment, to cost menu and event like it was their own business. It motivate them and show them the direct importance of their home homework in real life experience and prepare them to think on their own and become good professonal for their futur career.

During an electonic engine controls class I have students manipulate certain acuators and have them see how other inputs and output react to the change and then explain to my why that took place.

Is important to show usew critical thinking because theres going to be situations where they had to look for information and adapt to the real condition of a patient.

Hi Bryce,
This is exactly what we want; we want to get our students prepared for the real world. Happy Teaching!!! Let's prepare them to be successful!

Hi Andre,
Training aids really give students the opportunity to get prepared for the real world. These are the same types of situations that students will encounter in the workplace.

Patricia Scales

Hi Steven,
This is exactly what students need in order to get them ready for the workforce. I imagine most students are on point.

Patricia Scales

Hi Samantha,
Great ways to generate critical thinking skills. Students need this type of activity so that they will be better prepared for the workplace.

Hi Jay,
We have to ensure our students are knowledgeable about the subject matter. We can ensure their understanding by checking their critical thinking through the use of scenarios, case studies, role playing, mock learning, etc.

Patricia Scales

Hi Chris,
Great way to mix a group! The newer students can certainly learn from the advanced students.

Patricia Scales

I agree with DJ I use this same aproach and the feedback I get is great, it also lets me ascertain were they are in the knowledge of the subject.

We have a performance week in my class and what we do is before the performance week comes up we actually simulate that part of the course even though it has no impact on their grade it gets them prepared for the real thing

Hi Tammy,
Sounds like fun, and it is a good change up as well. I am sure effective learning takes place from this exercise. Students love a change that is fun, yet effective when it comes to learning.
