I think using key words to explain the content of the subject will grasp the attention of students, also emphaising the importance of the context while addressing the subject matter.

Involving something similiar to a jeopardy type style works for my students, fun and learning as well.

Hi Lisa,
We can also share applicable stories with students as they pertain to the lesson.

Ask students to give examples from their lives that pertain to your lecture.

Hi Robert,
It is good to know that this lecture is guided because the nature of the type of lecture can be very complex. Students enjoy having active learning.

I teach a "Legal Issues" instruction block in several different courses at my institution. The substance can be quite controversial. Given enough time, I can use the so-called Socratic method to both broaden and deepen the guided lectrure/discussion format which I most often use to make it more of an active learning experience.

This is the topic in which I have the greatest challenge. Each classroom has its own personality. I go from a class of extroverts to a class of turtles held up in their shells. Definitely two different approaches and energy expenditures! I am so used to anatomy & physiology lecture methods, making it 'active' is a real challenge, esp. when models/hands-on items aren't available. I do my best with pauses and questions/discussions/real life applications of the material. Most adults want to know 'why I'm learning this?'. Any suggestions?

Hi Linda,
Hands-on learning is the best form of learning. Students get it better when they can do it.

Hi Linda,
Hands-on learning is the absolute best form of learning. Students get it better when they can do it.

I agree completely.
When I am lecturing in theory, say dental cements, I like to bring out the cements and have the students mix each one while I am lecturing on it. Students grasp the lecture quickly that way.

Hi Michael,
Visual adds great clarity to provide for better understanding. Students tend to absorb the information better when they can see it.

I like to bring ou the parts we will be working on and let the students pass them around as we discuss them.I find they grasp the concept of the job much better that way.

Hi Mohammed,
Students love practical work as it pertains to the real world. We must allow our students to practice in the classroom based on what they will encounter in the real world.
Patricia

It is effficient way to engage students into practical work, seat work, hands on activities for making students active learners.

Hi Maria,
As educators we like to hear the words from students, "I get it now!" Students tend to understand it all better when we make learning apply to the real world.

I have found that in teaching the circulatory system, especially the the composition of blood, the function of the heart and the electrical conduction system, if I compare or relate these subject matters to things we are familiar with in our daily lives and than I have the students explain how these things relate to them in every day life, they truly come to an understanding of if and theirs faces light up as if it all just became very clear in their minds. It is amazing to me and a source of joy to hear a student say, "I get it now!"

Hi Cindy,
Students have a special fond for group work. Group work tend to be very effective toward learning for most students.

Hi David,
Group work tends to work well for students. I like how you make the application apply to those who have encountered counter insurgencies to their real life. The more practical, the better.
