Repetition

I am a new instructor this quarter. I was provided with a great curriculum; I truly believe it has a lot to offer students. However, I feel like the suggested topics overlap so much that we continually go back to the same discussions over and over (although we are only in week 3, so maybe it is too soon to tell). I do not want the content of the course to feel repetitive to students each week, so I'm concerned about this.

I agree with others. Though, you have a guideline that is provided, you are the one who is teaching and can make any modifications that are necessary. Adjusting to the setting is one of the abilities that is valuable to have as an instructor. Being effective and efficient is a key!

Stacey, another key thing to remember is that you need to analyze how your students react to your direction in which you're illustrating in the classroom. I feel through experience that students will open up more to you by sharing real life experiences and keep in a format for which everyone can understand. As funny as it may seem, students are more open with you once they realize that you're human too. Welcome to the educational world. You will do fine :)

Hi Stacey,
Since you have been given a curriculum you are fortunate since you don't have to generate your own content as a new instructor. The key is to take this content and personalize. I would suggest as you complete a lesson think of how you could do the review in different ways. Also, I would take the core of each new lesson and see how you can stamp your own personality on to the lessons. With the combination of personalizing the lessons and using different activities your students will not see the content of the course as being too repetitive.
