Gary-
Dress attire often set tones of expectation.
Having instructors conscience of proper business attire and timeliness would provide a positive model for students to succeed in their career field.

I try to explain to the students that everything you do gives hints to others about your credibility, whether it be showing up for class on time or doing a good job on assignments. Like first impressions, credibility is often judged by initial behaviors.
Very true -- Students view instructors as role models.
Hi Craig,
You are setting a good example for your students. As you say you have been where they want to go so you can show them the path to take to get there. They then have to put forth the effort to make sure they realize their career goal.
Gary
As an instructor, espeically in the technical areas that I am instructing, I am absolutley a role model, as I have been where they want to go. So I present myself accordingly. With the attire and the presentation of the materials to hands on labs. I discuss real world examples of the techncology in use and some of the scenarios that I have encountered in the feild.
I am a HUGE proponent of the concept of "attention to detail." I constantly talk with my students of the importance of paying attention to the "little things" and how crucial it can be to take the extra effort to do so. This is a life-skill that must be practiced in all areas from school to work. This is definitely a skill that I, as an instructor, can model for my students by paying attention to what may seem like "little" things such as starting class on time, adhering to scheduled breaks, greeting students with smiles, having an agenda for class, etc. In addition, I want to model to students that they, too, can be instructors through the experiences and backgrounds they bring to the class, and therefore, their presence in class is crucial to everyone's educational success.
The power of motivation! Motivation is key to learning success. If I maintain motivation, it will be sure to transfer to my students. Ultimately, students will then find success.

My field requires that students be informed about fashion and the latest trends in apparel and color. I can model professional, but fashionable dress to help show the students how to be fashionable and professional in the workplace. Another model I can demonstrate is through my teaching methods and course set up, I can teach the organizational and fast thinking skills the students will be required to use in their career field.
Modeling professionalism, focus and sense of urgency are crucial in my field, Culinary Arts. However, students may not know what they are seeing in the instructor's behavior unless she/he specifically tells them to what to look for. I will tell my students to notice how I move in the kitchen, that I am able to accomplish much more when my station is organized and clean, etc.
Hi Sara,
You make a good point about how important it is for adjunct faculty to remember they are model in a number of different ways. They bring to the classroom the most current aspects of the field since they have been working in it just prior to coming to class or doing an online session. This is powerful for students to see these folks in action.
Gary
I think instructors role model for students in so many ways. Students look up to instructors by the position they hold. Therefore, it is important instructors carry themselves in a professional manner. Many adjunct faculty hold postitions the students are striving to become. In those cases, the instructor is not only representing the school, they are representing their profession and agency as well. They way the carry themselves will make a lasting impression on how the students perceive professionals in that area.
Hi Omar,
Well said and right on. This is what being a model is all about.
Gary
I can begin by dressing and grooming appropriately. I must also pay close attention to the way I communicate and express myself. In short, I must model the traits and characteristics of the professional that I would like them to become. one that will ultimately succeed.
If as a role model you are demonstarting the behavior/technique correctly and taking what you are doing in a serious and professional manner, the student will see that this is how they should also behave/perform.
Hi Royal,
Good point about professional dress. You do set the stage for coming course if you present yourself as a dedicated professional educator.
Gary
I have found that there is a great deal of differene how you are perceived just by your dress. I think a shirt and tie does more for your image and hence the respect you get from your students. Of course, a shirt and tie are not the only things a student will judge you by, but it does set a standard of high expectation and respect for your profession.
We always need to set the example by being professional starting with our appearance and secondly our behavior.
thnx
It is essential to understand the learning styles of different students. Some find rewards in discovering things themselves, some need to be guided more than others, still others find it more rewarding to work in teams, and vice versa.
For me, using the above to relate to students is one way that I can serve as a role model. Also, knowing my material well, and conducting myself in a professional manner assists, so that, I can at the very least, win their respect.
lead by example. let them know how important a work ethic is and to constantly push yourself. help them understand the importance of professionalism and responsibility.
share anecdotes from my own professional life and experiences. be honest with students. maintain professionalism but be honest.
