Hi Marie,
Good plan. These efforts will enable you to expand your expertise while increasing your abilities to be an effective and efficient instructor.
Gary
Keep up with the current information.
Discuss with other professionals.
Make use of as many senses as possible while teaching: Vision (Power points and diagrams), Tactile (taking notes, and hands on), hearing (lecture).
After taking the ED101 course I have been made aware of many possibilities on how to expand my instructional capabilities.
I feel that involving the student in learning activities will create a more engaging experience. (fro example - instead of me giving demonstrations of certain techniques and processes, I would set up students with these tasks and have the work through them on there own and then discuss the outcome with them)
I have a few activities which allow the class as a whole to take part, but increasing the amount of times the student are asked to participate in this manner will take my class to another level. It is difficult to create group activities that are appropriate/relevant.
This is something I am keen to advance in.

Hi Susan,
Good professional development plan. These types of opportunities will give you new ideas you can incorporate into your instruction as well as give you contacts you can call upon should you have questions.
Gary
Hi Stephanie,
This is going to be a great experience for you. I am excited hearing about it. The content that you will gain is going to be great but your comment about the networking is a good one as well. You are going to have a group of professionals you can call upon as questions about teaching come up.
Gary
One way to expand on my instructional abilities is to participate in all educational sessions whether it is part of my career requirements or as an self initiated enrichment learning plan.
I plan on attending a live seminar for "Effective Teaching Strategies." The seminar will cover strategies for the clinical settings, which I believe will help me expand my instructional abilities as a Clinical Instructor. The seminar will also help me network with other instructors, giving me the opportunity to ask fellow instructors what styles and strategies they use in the clinical setting.
Hi Sherri,
Good plan for professional development. As you get more tools in your teaching tool kit you will see an increased impact on the lives of your students. This is what teaching is all about.
Gary
Hi Sherri,
Very cool! I am going to go to an International Technology Forum at University of California San Diego. The plan is to also collaborate with the entreprenuers that could give me the latest infomation for my business students.
Currently I am working on expanding my instructional abilities by taking additional classes at Penn State University. In addition to this, I also talk with my peers and participate in sharing different instructional strategies that will be useful, depending upon the class I am teaching and also my audience.
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for sharing this great list with us. You are right on the mark with your comments. I like your last one and it is the one that keeps us coming back to the classroom and that is have "fun" teaching. This makes it work it.
Gary
*I try to model after successful teachers. Nothing like learning from the best.
*I try to prepare ahead to better express my excitement on the subject to be taught. If I have the mechanics in line then I have the ability to relax and show my enthusiasm for the subject being taught.
* I love these modules because I may know my subject mater after 25 years in the field of health care but teaching it and presenting it in a digestible style is harder then it looks. The psychology of learning is the area that I am need instruction.
*I try to see my classes from the students perspective. I had 6 years of college schooling so I have some experience at that.
*I take seminars and watch how that presenter approaches their material.
* I keep improving my wheel, I get feed back with a form I developed and learn from the learners about what works and what does not work.
* I try to have fun and not take my mistakes to seriously and just try to learn from them.
Hi Gail,
You have a good professional development plan laid out for yourself. Keep up the planning and growth efforts and your students will continue to benefit from your expanded expertise.
Gary
I teach microbiology. It hasn't been enough to be the model, manager and motivator when it comes to teaching students who never came across any chemistry or biology before. In addition, the subject has to be delivered at an accelerated pace. I find myself pushing for ways to jolt the students into remembering what is covered, dipping into my creative juices and trying methods to make it exciting. I bring in current stories that are related and ask them to do the same. I'm learning to provide improved powerpoints and handouts. Assessing and adapting to their needs is critical. I am observing others who have the expertise I hope to aspire to.
Hi Shelly,
Great way to create a professional development plan for yourself. Keep looking for ways to expand your knowledge and expertise and you will continue to enjoy teaching. I wish you much teaching success.
Gary
I feel that a good way to expand my abilities is to observe other instructors. I frequently sit in on other classes and always get good ideas. I also take advantage of continuing education courses that are offered at my institution, as well as others that are offered in my area. The more knowledge I gain, the more I can pass on to my students.
Hi Patrick,
What a great way to find what normally might have been untapped resources. You found them and was able to gather information from these experts to use in your own teaching.
Gary
Hi Curt,
Some students are more hesitant to answer questions or contribute to class so they are hard to read in relation to understanding concepts or content. What I do is to give them case studies to respond to and hand in to me. Their answers or solutions to the problem give me an clear understanding of what they do and don't understand about the course.
This would be in addition to mini-quizzes I give to check for understanding throughout the course.
Gary
Taking courses such as the one I am currently enrolled in helps to expand on my instructional abilities. In addition, observing other professionals in "teach" mode is a good way to pick up some new abilities.

I quickly found out I did not have enough material to teach. I heard that UWM was starting a degree in Cultural Foundations of Education. The name really resonated with me.I met with Associate Professor Aaron Schutz, chair of the Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies.Schutz and other faculty members, including Edgar Epps, Thandeka Chapman and Raji Swaminathan, showed me a world of contested knowledge of critical race theory and participatory democracy, particularly as it might pertain to relations between police and communities.
